Wilson Falls In Pair At Brandywine

(ASTON, Pa.) – Wilson dropped a pair of games to one of the top teams in the conference in Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday afternoon. A valiant comeback attempt by the Phoenix came up just short in Game 1. The nightcap saw Wilson score first in the opening frame, but the Nittany Lions were able to answer shortly after and held the Phoenix in check the rest of the way.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 5, Penn State Brandywine 7
Game 2 – Wilson 1, Penn State Brandywine 8

Venue: Maple Zone

Records: Wilson 16-11, 5-5 UE; Penn State Brandywine 23-7, 9-1

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Doubles in the first and third helped the hosts take the lead as the first provided one run and the other added two more for a 3-0 lead. Wilson was able to crack the scoreboard in the top of the fourth thanks to a pair of errors that allowed Carleigh Magers (FY, Mount Airy, Md. / Urbana) to score.
  • Brandywine added to its lead as it answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame. Three of the runs came on a home run that set the score at 7-1.
  • Wilson didn't give up and were quick to respond as Katelyn Keller (FY, Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) tripled to center and scored Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) in the process. Keller was able to score on a wild pitch during the next at bat.
  • Weaver wasn't finished as she added another pair one inning later. Another triple, this time by Sydney Hartle (FY, Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) set up Weaver who doubled down the left field line. Kiera O'Brine (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern), who was pinch running for Hartle, and Elena Worthington (So., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) both scored on the play to get Wilson within two. However, that was the closest the Phoenix could get as Brandywine held on for the win.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • It appeared as though the momentum generated late in the opener carried over as Wilson took an early lead. Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) was hit by a pitch and eventually made her way around the diamond and scored on a double by Hartle. Unfortunately the offense was shut down the rest of the way. Brandywine was then able to tie the game in the second on consecutive doubles. Five hits led to four runs one inning later. A three-run home run followed in the fifth to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Weaver was spectacular in the opener as she went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
  • Keller's triple was her ninth this season. She leads the nation in triples per game and is second in the nation in total triples.
  • Hartle recorded hits in both contests.
