Phoenix Tripped Up By Notre Dame

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The first meeting between Wilson and Notre Dame saw teams combine for 29 runs on 28 hits, but the final result saw the Gators edge the Phoenix on Wednesday. The pinball affair saw the Phoenix jump out to an early lead only to see the visitors take it from them midway through the game. The lead then exchanged twice more after large innings by both sides.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 14, Notre Dame 15

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 6-20, 4-7 UE; Notre Dame 6-20, 2-9 UE

How It Happened
  • The Wilson bats were firing on all cylinders at the start as the Phoenix hit around the lineup in a five-run inning. Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) highlighted the frame with a bases-loaded double that scored a pair. Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside), Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley), and Brady Bakner (5th, Waynesboro, PA. / Scotland Campus) all hit in additional runs. One inning later Daphney added another pair on a base hit through the right side.
  • The Gators started chipping away at the lead starting in the fourth with two runs and another in the fifth. Notre Dame then flipped the script temporarily with a five-spot in the sixth to make the score 8-7.
  • The Phoenix were able to return the favor in the bottom of the seventh. Torres doubled in Daphney to start the rally and scored one batter later on a Tony Scott (FY, Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) single through the right to put the home team back in front. Three infield errors helped even more as Bakner, Tyler O'Brien (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora), and Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) all provided additional runs to go up 12-8.
  • Torres led off the eighth with a single to right and Scott hit a triple off the fence near the foul pole in right to make it 13-8 heading to the ninth where things got crazy once again. Notre Dame was able to rally for seven runs on five hits to go back in front, but Wilson put itself in position for the win. Daphney hit a sacrifice fly to score Seth Bivens (Jr., Hancock, Md. / Hagerstown C.C.). An intentional walk loaded the bases and put the winning run on second base, but a fly out to right ended the hopes of a walk off.
Inside The Numbers
  • Daphney finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
  • Torres and Scott also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs each. Torres scored twice as well.
  • Middlebrooks was able to bring in three RBIs on one hit with two runs scored.
  • Bivens scored thrice on the day.
  • Wilson posted 10 stolen bases on the day. Bivens, Middlebrooks, and O'Brien all had two.
