(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – On a grey and gusty afternoon,
Sadie Fike (So., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) brought the sunshine with a golden goal that lit up an overtime win for Wilson over Bryn Athyn on Tuesday. With just 37 seconds left in the second portion of the first overtime, Fike took a feed from
Alaina Marek (So., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) from the eight meters and put enough force on the shot to put the ball over the goal line despite a solid effort by the Lions' keeper to make the save.
With one game remaining in the regular season, the Phoenix can lock in a home game for the semifinals if they defeat Cedar Crest and St. Mary's defeats Bryn Athyn on Saturday.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 13, Bryn Athyn 12 (OT)
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 3-10, 2-1 UE; Bryn Athyn 7-3, 2-1 UE
How It Happened
- Despite lightning postponing the start time and an early Lions goal once the game did begin, the initial stages were anything but dim for the Blue and White who used a 5-1 run to take control of the game. Fike scored her first of the day on a feed from Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) to tie the game and Alyvia Henneman (So. Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) scored just 39 seconds later on a free position attempt for the lead. Bryn Athyn's Sabrina Brock tied the game midway through the frame, but Henneman was able to answer on a dish from Emily Young (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly). Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) got into the mix with a free position goal and another in regular play with an assist from Fike. The Lions' Kira Bradley scored afterwards to make it a 5-3 game headed to the second.
- Wilson maintained control with excellent defensive work while adding to its lead with goals from Sage Lague (Sr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) and Marek. Lague scored a pair of those, one of which came on a Gamby-Mickey helper on a power play. Marek also scored while the Phoenix were up a player after Finley Vandevander (FY, Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) found her midway through the period. However, Brock and Bradley hooked up for a score with 2:27 to make it 8-4 Wilson at the break.
- Proverbially speaking, things appeared sunshine and rainbows as Fike and Marek scored to put the Phoenix up 10-4 just 1:18 into the second half. But as the weather turned, so did the momentum tide and the Lions were able to take advantage by way of an 8-1 run that was capped by a Bradley score to put them back in front at 12-11 with 2:44 to go in regulation.
- Undeterred, the Phoenix remained focused. Fike was able to win the ensuing draw control, and after a Bryn Athyn penalty, Ney hit Lague for the game-tying goal with 2:20 remaining to force overtime.
- In the extra period, both teams had opportunities to score. Kaelyn Goff (So., Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) came up with a huge safe just before teams switched sides, while Henneman was stopped by the Lions' Chloe Munyon. A yellow card left the Phoenix with another chance late in the first overtime, and this time they made it count. Marek started the free position attempt from the left side and connected with Fike on the right. The shot appeared to be saved at first, but there was enough force behind it that it was able to sneak past the goalie and trickle over the goal line.
Inside The Numbers
- Fike finished with five points on four goals and an assist. She was busy all over the field though as she added six ground balls, two caused turnovers, and four draw controls to her stat line.
