Softball Sweeps Ravens On Senior Day

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson got back to its winning ways as it swept Rosemont in a United East doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix pounded out 13 hits en route to a Game 1 win in five innings, while Game 2 saw a hot start with six runs in the first to lay the groundwork for the sweep.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 9, Rosemont 1 (5 Innings)
Game 2 – Wilson 8, Rosemont 4

Venue: Wilson Softball Field

Records: Wilson 16-9, 5-3 UE; Rosemont 5-23, 4-6 UE

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • It was a pitchers' duel for the first four innings with only one run being scored during that time. Samantha Rybacki (FY, Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) set the tone with a pair of strikeouts in the first inning and added another two in the third.
  • On the opposite end the Phoenix weren't able to break through until the fourth. Kayla Talbert (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown / Saint Peter's) led off with a double to left center and made her way to third on a ground out. Two batters later, she was able to score on a squeeze play as Caitlin Oliviero (So., Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third base line.
  • While Rosemont answered with a run in the top of the fifth, the flood gates opened up for the Phoenix in a good way as they scored in bunches in the bottom of the fifth. Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) led off with a walk and scored on an errant throw after she reached third on a Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) base hit to center. Kendall eventually scored on Talbert base hit. The runs continued to pile on as Abigail Evans (So., Muncy, Pa. / Warrior Run) hit in Madison Briggs (Jr., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) and Talbert scored on a wild pitch. Waverly Moffett (So., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) followed with a single that scored two, but scored herself as an errant throw by the catcher in an attempt to get her out at second went into the outfield all the way to the fence to make it 8-1. Katelyn Keller (FY, Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) ended the game in walk-off fashion with a base hit up the middle to score Weaver.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Rosemont struck first after Alicia Gotts reached on a base hit up the middle, stole a couple of bases, and scored on a ground out. However, the Phoenix bats were still red-hot from the previous outburst to end the first game. Kiera O'Brine (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) tied the game as she scored after the catcher moved her foot off home plate too early on a fielder's choice. Kendall, Keller and Sydney Hartle (FY, Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) then made it 4-1 after they both scored on consecutive wild pitches. Talbert added another run on a double down the left field line that brought in Briggs. She scored two batters later as Emmaly Randalls (FY, Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) hit her in on a groundout.
  • The Ravens were able to answer with two runs to make it a 6-3 game in the top of the second, but Wilson added one of its own as Briggs hit in Keller in the bottom of the second. The score remained dormant until the sixth when Rosemont scored on an errant throw, while the Phoenix plated another as Moffett singled through the left side to score Rybacki who hit a pinch-hit triple.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ryback started Game 1 and picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. She struck out four and allowed just one run on three hits and a walk in 5.0 innings of work.
  • Rylee Piper (So., Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) came on in relief in the third inning of Game 2. She proceeded to allow just one unearned run while she struck out three on five hits to improve to 4-4.
  • Kendall started out her Senior Day in spectacular fashion as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Her double was also her first extra base hit this season.
  • Keller went a combined 5-for-8 on the afternoon. She now has 40 hits on the year.
  • Talbert had a strong all-around day as she went 4-for-7 with three runs, two RBIs, and two doubles.
