Cairn Takes Two From Phoenix

(LANGHORNE, Pa.) – Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) went a combined 4-for-7 on the, but Cairn had too much firepower as Wilson dropped both contests of a doubleheader on Sunday. The Phoenix stayed close with the Highlanders with the exception of two innings which ultimately led to the hosts going on to the victory in both games.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 6, Cairn 17 (7 Innings)
Game 2 – Wilson 2, Cairn 12 (8 Innings)

Venue: Stillman Complex

Records: Wilson 6-19, 4-6 UE; Cairn 17-11, 6-3 UE

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Smith gave the Blue and White an early lead after he reached on a double to right center. Following a base hit by Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley), Smith was able to score after Middlebrooks got caught in a rundown. Cairn answered with a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the bottom half of the first.
  • A pair of hits and an error helped Wilson regain the lead in the second. Brady Bakner (5th, Waynesboro, Pa. / Scotland Campus ) hit a double to bring in Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) and later scored himself as Tyler O'Brien (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) reached on an infield error. Two innings later, O'Brien hit in Torres for a 4-1 lead.
  • Things soon went south for the Phoenix as Cairn tied the game on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth. The Highlanders then opened the flood gates with 11 runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Charles Musser (So., Thurmont, Md. / Linganore) hit an RBI double to score Samuel Martin (Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown) and Joe Nawrocki (FY, Parkton, Md. / Calvert Hall) hit a sacrifice fly to score Musser in the seventh, but the deficit was too big to overcome.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • The nightcap was much more of a defensive oriented game for seven innings. The Highlanders did score solo runs in the first three innings for a 3-0 lead, but the Phoenix were able to keep them at bay for the next four.
  • Wilson built some momentum in the eighth with Martin reaching on an infield single and Smith scoring him on a double to right center. Two batters later Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) singled in Smith to cut the deficit to one.
  • Unfortunately, the Phoenix wouldn't get another chance at the plate as the Highlanders got hot as well in the bottom half. The hosts put together five hits, three of which were doubles, to score nine runs and were able to win the game in a walk-off.
Inside The Numbers
  • Smith finished the day 4-for-7 with multiple hit games in both contests. He scored and hit a double in both games as well. He now has multiple hit games in seven of his last 10 games.
  • A third (six) of Wilson's 18 hits on the day went for two bases.
  • Middlebrooks extended his hit streak to 10 games.
