Supensky Strikes Out 10 In Win

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson got back in the win column and pulled even in the conference standings with a victory over Penn State Berks on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. Chase Supensky (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Towson) led the way defensively as he struck out a career-high 10 batters, while Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and Tony Scott (FY, Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) drove in two runs each while Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) had a three-hit day to lead the offense.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, Penn State Berks 3

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 6-17, 4-4 UE; Penn State Berks 6-22, 3-6 UE

How It Happened
  • Starter Adrian Lugo (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico / Manuel Cruz Maceira) set the tone by pitching a pair of scoreless innings and struck out four while allowing just one base runner on an infield single. Supensky relieved him in the third in and allowed two runs, but otherwise was lights out which included three of his 10 strikeouts in the same inning.
  • The Phoenix bats were quick to pick Supensky up and give him a lead to work with. After walks were issued to Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) and Smith, Middlebrooks hit in the first run with a double down the left field line to bring in Martin. Two batters later Scott doubled to left center to bring in Smith and Middlebrooks.
  • Wilson added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Turner (Jr., Brick, N.J. / Brick Memorial / Penn State Harrisburg) led off the frame after he reached first on a wild pitch on a dropped third strike. Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) followed with a double to right center before Martin flied out to right for the sacrifice to score Turner. Seth Bivens (Jr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) followed with a base hit to right which resulted in Torres scoring after the right fielder threw the ball out of play and left Bivens on third. Smith made it count with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Martin, Bivens and Smith connected to add another run for the Phoenix in the sixth. Martin took one for the team and was hit by a pitch before Bivens moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Smith laced one through the left side to score Martin and made the score 7-2. Berks was limited to just one more run in the ninth to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • In total the Wilson battery struck out a season-high 15 batters as Ben Tunnell (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla. / Lakewood) added another punch out in the ninth. The total surpassed the previous best of 13 against Penn State Brandywine. It's the fourth time the Phoenix pitching staff has thrown at least 10 strikeouts in a game this season.
  • Middlebrooks continues to have a fantastic season with his seventh multiple-hit game of the year. He increased his hit streak to eight games with a pair of three-hit games during that stretch. Two of his hits on Wednesday went for extra bases as he was just a home run short of the cycle.
  • Torres and Smith both added multiple-hit games for the Phoenix.
