Phoenix Baseball Falls To Blazers

(FREDERICK, Md.) – Another solid day was had at the plate by Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside), but the rest of the offense was largely limited as Hood defeated Wilson on Friday afternoon. The Blazers scored a pair in the first and scored in six of the eight innings they hit to hand the Phoenix the defeat.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 3, Hood 9

Venue: FCC Baseball Field

Records: Wilson 1-8, Hood 2-8

How It Happened
  • The Blazers got on board first with a two-out rally in the first. After base hits by Ty Broughton and Matthew Stout, a double by James Gruenfelder brought them both home. Daphney got one of the runs back after leading off with a single in the top of the second.
  • Hood added another in the bottom of the frame before Wilson countered with one in the third. Tyler Gibbons (So., Forrest Hill, Md. / Calberty Hall) got the inning moving with a base hit before moving to second on a base on balls issued to Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley). Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spaldin) did the honors of bringing him home on another base hit.
  • The hosts once again scored a solo run in the third and made it 5-2 in the fifth. A Daphney double sparked some momentum in the top of the sixth and he later scored on a ground out by Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) to make the score 5-3. However, it would be the last run for the Phoenix. Hood added four runs the next two innings while the Phoenix were limited to one hit the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Daphney finished the day 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Gibbons added a pair of hits in four at-bats with a run.
  • Starter Dallas Gilbert (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / Penn State Haltoon) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. He went the first 5.0 innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits and three walks.
