(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Thirteen different players scored goals as Wilson defeated Trinity Washington in women's lacrosse for its first win of the season on Monday afternoon. Of the baker's dozen that found the back of the net, seven scored more than once while nine had multiple point days.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 21, Trinity 7
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 1-8, Trinity 0-7
How It Happened
- The Blue and White were jumping at the bit at the start and it took them just 12 seconds to light up the scoreboard as Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) found Alaina Marek (So., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty). It was the first domino to fall and the Phoenix quickly picked up steam as Marek found Sage Lague (Sr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) for another score 38 seconds later. A Trinity penalty helped Wilson on its next score as Sadie Fike (So., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) took a helper from Riley Lemay (So., Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) for the power play goal. Alyvia Henneman (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) then added a free position goal for a quick 4-0 lead in the opening two minutes.
- The Tigers didn't go down quietly and was able to get back into the contest with a pair of goals by Nan-Elizabeth Holt. Thankfully the Phoenix were quick to respond as Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg), Emily Young (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly), and Marek all scored to put Wilson up 7-2. Na'Kiya Butler and Nzubechi Hall added goals for the Tigers before Wilson closed the first with scores from Henneman and Trinity Brown (So., Laurel, Md. / Resevoir).
- Wilson dominated even more in the second quarter and built upon the last two goals of the first and made it an 8-0 run. Lague, Ney, Fike, and Gamby-Mickey all scored before Finley Vandevander (FY, Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) scored back-to-back goals for a 15-4 lead. Holt added another for the Tigers before Young closed the half with a score and a 16-5 lead.
- Little changed in the third as depth aided the Phoenix with Lemay, Maggie Greeley (FY, Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen), Lague, Anya Grzesek (FY, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. / Holy Redeemer / Keystone), and Bianca Sommers (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) all scoring to put the Blue and White at 21.
Inside The Numbers
- In addition to scoring four points on two goals and two assists, Gamby-Mickey shined on special teams with four draw controls. Marek and Grzesek added three each.
- Defensively the team was paced by Zoe Rosen (FY, Shepherdstown, W.Va. / Jefferson) who picked up four ground balls. Ney added three while Vandevander and Fike picked up two each. Speaking of, Vandevander and Fike led the team with two caused turnovers.
- Kaelyn Goff (So., Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) picked up the win between the pipes by making six saves on 17 shots faced.
- Wilson outshot Trinity 40-17. The Phoenix also won the ground ball battle 17-12 and draw controls 19-10.
- The Phoenix took excellent care of the ball with only eight turnovers in the game and went a perfect 11-for-11 on clear attempts.
