Baseball Rallies To Win Game 1 vs. Rosemont In Split

(BRYN MAWR, Pa.) – Wilson rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to stun Rosemont to win Game 1 and split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) smacked a home run to tie the game while Tyler O'Brien (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) knocked in Matthew Brown (FY, Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) for the go-ahead run en route to the win. The Phoenix nearly came from behind again in Game 2, but the Ravens were able to hold off the late charge the second time around.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 15, Rosemont 11
Game 2 – Wilson 8, Rosemont 11

Venue: Heuser Field

Records: Wilson 5-14, 3-1 UE; Rosemont 6-15, 1-5 UE

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Rosemont took the early jump on Wilson with a 5-1 lead after two innings. The Ravens opened up the scoring with the first two runs before Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) went yard with a solo shot in the top of the second.
  • Wilson was able to get back into the mix and tie the game with a four-spot in the top of the third. Back-to-back errors gave the Phoenix new life and Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) made the Ravens pay with a three-run blast to make it 5-4. Another Ravens error allowed Torres to score from third to tie the game later in the inning. However, Rosemont was able to answer with two runs in the bottom half.
  • After both teams added another run, the Phoenix took the lead with three in the seventh. A Middlebrooks double to right brought in Daphney before Torres singled to right to score Middlebrooks which tied the game. Torres later scored on a Ravens error to make the score 9-8. The lead was short-lived as Rosemont responded with three runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the seventh.
  • In the top of the ninth, Torres was able to tie the game early with a two-run homer. Three batters later O'Brien doubled to left to score Brown. Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown) hit him in on the next play before he scored himself on a Brady Bakner (5th, Waynesboro, Pa. / Scotland Campus) triple. Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) closed the scoring with a base hit to left to bring in Bakner.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Wilson took an early lead as Martin led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Smith to center field. Rosemont tied the game in the bottom half and added four more on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the second.
  • The Blue and White found some rhythm at the plate and scored in each of the final six innings. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the Ravens found some rhythm as well in the sixth and seventh with six runs themselves. Martin provided additional life for the Phoenix in the ninth as his single to left scored Torres to make it 11-8 and brought the tying run to the plate, but Rosemont was able to retire the next batter for the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • In his second appearance of the season Logan Frazier (So., Linthicum, Md. / Winters Mill) recorded his first win of the year and second of his collegiate career. He struck out a pair and threw 2.2 innings of no-hit ball.
  • Torres was lethal at the plate as he went a combined 5-for-8 on the day with five RBIs – all of which were in Game 1 – and four runs scored. His home run was the first of his career.
  • Middlebrooks went 4-for-9 for the day with his second three-hit game of the year. Three of his hits were doubles to give him nine on the season.
  • Daphney's homer was his fourth of the season.
  • Martin added a pair of multiple-hit games and went a combined 5-for-11 on the day. Two of his hits were doubles. He scored twice and hit in two as well.
