Baseball Falls At Berks

(READING, Pa.) – Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) had a spectacular day as he went 4-for-6 for Wilson in its game at Penn State Berks, but the Nittany Lions spoiled the afternoon with a come-from-behind victory. Wilson started out hot with a 7-3 lead after four innings before the hosts rallied for seven runs in the final three frames to take the win.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 9, Penn State Berks

Venue: Hintz Field

Records: Wilson 5-15, 3-2 UE; Penn State Berks 6-19, 3-4 UE

How It Happened
  • Berks struck first with a three-run first inning before Wilson got the bats moving in the top of the second. After Joe Nawrocki (FY, Parkton, Md. / Calvert Hill) walked and Tyler O'Brien (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) singled through the left side, Martin started his day at the plate with a double down the third base line to bring them both in. The Phoenix added two more in the top of the third to take the lead. Tony Scott (FY, Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) tied the game with a base hit up the middle to score Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside). Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) soon after gave Wilson the lead after he scored on a wild pitch.
  • That lead extended to 7-3 in the top of the fourth. Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) found a spot in right field to score Martin who reached earlier in the frame on a base hit and moved to second on an error. Daphney added another run on a base hit to right as well that allowed Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) to score. Smith then scored on a wild pitch.
  • Scoring was dormant until the top of the sixth. Martin led off the inning with a double down the left field line and eventually scored on a base hit through the left side by Smith.
  • Things started to go south for the Phoenix as Berks started its comeback with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Momentum remained on the Nittany Lions' side as they put up a five-spot on six hits in the seventh. Scott tallied an RBI single to left to bring in Torres, but Berks added another pair in the eighth to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Martin continues his hot play as of late with a 4-for-6 day with two runs and two RBIs. Two of his hits were doubles, and he is now 9-for-19 over the last three games. All four of his doubles this season have been during that stretch.
  • Daphney wasn't far behind with his 10th multiple hit day. He was 3-for-5 from the plated with a run and an RBI.
  • Smith, Scott, Torres and Obrien all pounded out a pair of hits. For Smith, it was his 11th multiple hit game of the season.
