Briggs, Weaver Get Pair Of Hits As Phoenix Fall to Pioneers

(NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – Only one game was on the docket today for the Wilson softball team as it took on Spartanburg Methodist of the NAIA. Aside from one inning, the Phoenix largely held the Pioneers in check, but in turn were limited at the plate as well which resulted in a shutout.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Spartanburg Methodist 5

Venue: North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 2-4, Spartanburg Methodist 9-6

How It Happened
  • A Madison Briggs (Jr., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) single down the left field line and a Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) double to left center provided Wilson with the first scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were able to work their way out of the jam by retiring the next two batters.
  • Conversely Spartanburg Methodist flipped the script and had a two out rally to score four in the bottom of the frame. The Pioneers led off with a pair of base hits before a fielder's choice and a pop up to short. A base hit to center and a walk loaded the bases before a pair of wild pitches plated another pair. Another single to center made it 4-0. A leadoff double in the fourth helped SMC score its final run. Another wild pitch moved the runner to third and a single through the left side made it 5-0.
  • Wilson had another strong opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth with Briggs and Weaver once again reaching on base hits to the outfield. Once again, however, the Pioneers worked their way out unscathed with a fly out to right and a fielder's choice.
  • An error in the seventh allowed the Phoenix one last chance as Waverly Moffett (So., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) singled to left. The misplay by the left fielder allowed Kiera O'Brine (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) to move to third and Moffett to go to second. The threat and consequently the game was ended with a pop up to second and a line out to center field.
Inside The Numbers
  • Briggs continues to be a tear at the plate. She has now gone 6-for-9 in North Myrtle Beach with three runs.
  • Samantha Rybacki (FY, Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) had an impressive performance in relief as she allowed just one hit and struck out two in 3.2 innings of work.
