Softball Sweeps Tuesday Spring Break Games

(NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – The final day of regular season games in South Carolina saw Wilson sweep the day with victories over Albion and Bay Bath. The Phoenix came from behind to defeat the Britons with the help of a Waverly Moffett (So., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) home run in the opener. Carleigh Magers (FY, Mt. Airy, Md. / Urbana) helped the Blue and White with a two-hit, three-RBI game against the Wildcats in Game 2.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 4, Albion 3

Venue: North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 4-4
Albion 2-5
Bay Path 1-3

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • It appeared that Wilson had the early momentum as Lindsey Dalenberg (So., Niles, Mich. / Edwardsburg) and Katelyn Keller (FY, Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) led off with a single and walk, respectively, and moved to up on a ground out before Albion worked its way out of the jam by retiring the next two batters. The Britons then turned around and scored one in each of the next two innings. The first came on a double to left center to score Kearney Miller who reached on a walk. Albion added a second after a bases-loaded single by Miller plated Emma Scrhamm in the second, but the Phoenix were able to get out of the frame with no additional damage.
  • Wilson eventually lit up the scoreboard with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Abigail Evans (So., Muncy, Pa. / Warrior Run) drilled a pitch through the left side, and after Caitlyn Oliviero (So., Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) came in to pinch run, Moffett left the ball park with the first Phoenix home run this season.
  • Moffett wasn't finished as she sparked the seventh inning rally to put Wilson ahead with a single to left center. A pair of wild pitches set her up on third which allowed her to score on a sacrifice bunt by Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road). Two batters later, Keller hit a single to left that brought in Kayla Talbert (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown / Saint Peter's) who reached earlier on a walk and stole second.
  • Wilson wasn't out of the woods quite yet as the Britons mustered up a comeback of their own. An error allowed Miller to reach before a Lilly Zaskowski double advanced her the rest of the way to make it a 4-3 game. The Phoenix preserved the win after groundouts to shortstop and third base followed.
How It Happened (Game 2 vs. Bay Path)
  • Magers put Wilson on the scoreboard on a Sydney Hartle (FY, Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) base kniock up the middle. The flood gates opened one inning later for the Phoenix. Keller made it 2-0 with a bases-loaded liner up the middle to score Dalenberg. Emily Randalls (FY, Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) moved up to third on the play and scored on a wild pitch. Magers followed up with a base hit to center to bring around Keller and Sydney Barker (FY, Bel Air, Md. / John Carroll).
  • Scoring picked up in the sixth for both teams. Rylee Piper (So., Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) pinch hit and singled to right to score Oliviero and Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) for a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats answered by taking advantage of an error in the bottom of the frame as a bases-loaded fielder's choice plated their first run.
  • Wilson added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Magers once again provided the magic with a base hit through the right side to score Moffett. Talbert, who reached on a double earlier in the frame scored two batters later as Hartle hit a sac fly to center.
  • Bay Path looked for a path for a comeback and a pair of walks and fielder's choices left runners on first and third. Consecutive base hits brought in three runs, but Wilson was able to get out of the jam with a pop up to short to end the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Piper went the distance to pick up her first win of the season against Albion. She allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts.
  • Elena Worthington (So., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) also earned her first win with a complete game in Game 2. She allowed four runs, three earned on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
  • Moffett scored thrice on the day with two runs in the opener. Against Albion, she went 2-for-3 with two RBI on the home run.
  • Magers finished Game 2 with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.
  • Wilson pounded out 13 hits against the Wildcats with nine different players recording them. In addition to Magers, Talbert and Hartle had multiple-hit games with three and two, respectively.
