(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson and Dickinson kicked off the weekend by meeting on the softball diamond in a battle of I-81 institutions on Friday afternoon. After the dust settled, each squad found itself on the winning end as the Phoenix took the opener while the Red Devils edged out the victory in the nightcap.
The Basics
Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 7, Dickinson 5
Game 2 – Wilson 6, Dickinson 7
Venue: Wilson Softball Field
Records: Wilson 8-6, Dickinson 8-6
How It Happened (Game 1)
- It didn't take long for the Wilson to get the scoreboard working as Kayla Talbert (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown / Saint Peter's) pounded a double to center for a 2-0 lead as Emily Randalls (FY, Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) and Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) scored. Talbert eventually was brought in on a Carleigh Magers (FY, Mount Airy, Md. / Urbana) base hit to right center three batters later. Dickinson was able to respond with a pair of base hits to score one in the second and tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the third.
- The Phoenix got the bats hot once again in the bottom of the third. Talbert started the rally with a walk and eventually scored on a single by Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp, Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff). Magers brought in another pair with a sharp double down the line as Weaver and Madison Briggs (Jr., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) scored. Magers eventually scored on a Sydney Barker (FY, Bel Air, Md. / John Carroll) base hit to make it a 7-3 game.
- After a pair of scoreless innings, the Red Devils added solo runs in the sixth and seventh, but was unable to get any closer as starter Julia Wilkes (FY, Abingdon, Md. / John Carroll) helped record three of the remaining putouts with lineouts or groundouts coming right back at her as she achieved the complete game win.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- Scoring didn't take a break during the encore as both teams started scoring in the first. For the Red Devils, a walk and a double help them take an early 1-0 lead. Wilson's response came in the way of base hits by Randalls and Kaitlyn Keller (FY, Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) before Talbert doubled to left to score them both. Deanna Estes (FY, West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) brought Talbert in two batters later with a single up the middle.
- The lead change was a sign of things to come. Dickinson came right back and regained the lead in the third with three runs on four hits, but Waverly Moffett (So., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) gave it right back to the Blue and White with a base hit up the middle to score Talbert and Keller. Dickinson then hopped on the draw-two trend with a two-RBI double to right to make the score 6-5 in the top of the fourth.
- Moffett did some more damage in the bottom of the fifth with a single through the right side to score Briggs. That tied the game, but Wilson was unable to do further damage.
- The difference came in the top of the sixth. A lead-off double immediately put Dickinson in scoring position and the Devils eventually regained the lead on a sacrifice fly.
Inside The Numbers
- Talbert had quite the day as she went a combined 4-for 5 with multiple hits in both contests. She added two RBIs and two runs in both games as well.
- Wilkes recorded the win in while allowing only two earned runs. She struck out seven while she improved to 3-0 on the day.
- While Keller's six game hit-streak came to an end in the opener, she picked right back up with her fifth multiple-hit game of the season. In doing so she also recorded her fifth extra-base hit of the season.
- The last three doubleheaders between these two squads have been split.
