Wilson Defeats LBC for Cline's 400th Win

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Rain may have prevented a second game from being played Saturday, but it didn't rain on Wilson's parade as it defeated Lancaster Bible in a non-conference contest. In doing so, head coach Brett Cline became the most recent coach to record 400 wins in his illustrious career.

The game itself was full of action with three home runs and scoring taking place in each of the first five innings.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, Lancaster Bible 5

Venue: Wilson Softball Field

Records: Wilson 9-6, Lancaster Bible 8-6

How It Happened
  • Lancaster Bible enjoyed a big first inning with a walk and a pair of base hits to score the first run. The Chargers later added a second on a comeback ground out to the pitcher. They threatened more, but the Phoenix were able to get out of the jam the rest of the way unscathed.
  • Wilson was able to answer in the bottom of the second. Kayla Talbert (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown / Saint Peter's) led off with a walk and eventually reached third on a wild pitch and a groundout. Carleigh Magers (FY, Mount Airy, Md. / Urbana) zipped a base hit up the middle to bring her in.
  • The Blue and White were able to break the game open with a five-spot in the third. Kaitlyn Keller (FY, Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) drilled a pitch to deep right and easily took a triple while bringing in Emily Randalls (FY, Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) who led off by getting hit by a pitch. A sacrifice fly by Talbert then plated Keller for a 3-2 lead. Magers added more damage with another base hit up the middle to bring in Madison Briggs (Jr., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) and Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff). Sydney Hartle (FY, Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) capped the rally with a double to center to score Magers.
  • The Chargers weren't finished and opened the fourth with a pair of solo home runs in the first three batters. However, the Phoenix were able to respond as Keller left the diamond with a deep shot to center to make it 7-4.
  • LBC added another in the top of the fifth, but that was as close as the visitors could get. Rylee Piper (So., Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) entered the game in relief to start the sixth and tossed a pair of perfect innings with three strikeouts to record the save and preserve the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Keller, Magers and Hartle were busy at the plat with all three having three-hit games. Keller was a double shy of the cycle and had two RBIs and two runs scored. Magers had three RBIs and a run scored.
  • Keller continues her impressive rookie season with her sixth multiple-hit game of the year. The home run was her second round trip of the year while the triple was her fourth of its variety and eighth extra base hit of the year.
  • Elena Worthington (So., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) started the game and was the winning pitcher for the Phoenix. She allowed four runs, three earned, with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
  • Coach Cline's first victory came back in the 2001 season when Wilson hosted Philadelphia Biblical University and won 6-2. That school is now known as Cairn.
