Women's Lacrosse Drops Home Opener vs. Lycoming

(SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson welcomed Lycoming for its home opener on a windy Monday evening under the lights just up state Route 11. Unfortunately, the Warriors spoiled the festivities by defeating the Phoenix thanks to a well-balanced offense and a suffocating defense.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 2, Lycoming 19

Venue: Robb Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 0-3, Lycoming 2-1

How It Happened
  • Wilson had the first crack on offense after an Emily Young (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) ground ball and ensuing successful clear, but a turnover ended the offensive threat and left the Warriors on the counterattack. The Phoenix were able to avoid the first few free position attempts by the visitors, but a green card left Lycoming with a player-up opportunity and eventually scored 3:50 into the contest. The Warriors grew stronger from there and posted up seven additional goals in the frame.
  • The second quarter started out with promise for the Blue and White as Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) won the draw to start the frame. Once in the offensive zone, Sadie Fike (So., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) hit paydirt on a helper by Alaina Marek (So., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty). Lycoming was quick to return the favor by winning the ensuing draw and took advantage of a free position attempt by pulling it back out and scoring. The Warriors added five more for a 14-1 halftime lead.
  • While Lycoming added five more goals, the Phoenix kept giving full effort until the final buzzer. Riley Lemay (So., Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) caused a late turnover which turned into a last-minute shot by Marek that found the back of the net to close out the scoring.
Inside The Numbers
  • Gamby-Mickey tallied six draw controls to pace the Phoenix off the start.
  • Kaelyn Goff (So., Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) recorded a season-high 14 saves between the pipes. She added a pair of caused turnovers to go with three ground balls as well.
  • Lycoming benefitted from the eight-meter line with six free position scores.
  • Riley Block led the Warriors with six goals.
Up Next
The Phoenix are off until the weekend when they head to New Wilmington, Pa., to take on Wesminster on Saturday. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
