Phoenix Outhit Brockport, But Fall To Golden Eagles

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson and SUNY Brockport closed their mutual opening weekends with a slug fest at Henninger Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix banged out 13 hits to outpace the Golden Eagles by three, but the visitors got the better of the Blue and White in the runs department to remain unbeaten.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 9, SUNY Brockport 14

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 1-1, SUNY Brockport 3-0

How It Happened
  • While Brockport opened the scoring with a solo run in the first, a bulk of both teams' offense came in the third inning as they combined for 12 runs. An error on a fielder's choice and a passed ball aided the visitors as they were able to bat around and score seven of the dozen on three hits with all scores unearned to make it an 8-0 contest.
  • The Phoenix didn't waste any time in closing the gap as they loaded the bases to start the bottom half of the frame. Dean Mercer (Sr., Dunedin, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic) brought in Ryan Turner (Jr., Brick, N.J. / Brick Memorial / Penn State Harrisburg) on a poke to left and Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) plated Seth Bivens (Jr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) after being hit by a pitch to quickly make it 8-2. A balk followed to score Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley). After the next two batters were retired, Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) singled in Mercer while Daphney scored on a Sandro Granados (FY, Hyattsville, Md. / Northwestern) base hit to left.
  • Wilson threatened again in the fourth with base hits by Bivens and Torres to start the at-bat. Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) made it pay off as he drilled one through the left side to score Bivens and cut the deficit to two.
  • Brockport added more offense in the top of the sixth with bases loaded double down the right field line to bring in three more runs. Wilson was able to get a pair of them back in the bottom half as Mercer scored on a wild pitch and Martin hit a high chopper over the pitcher to score Daphney who helped move the frame along with a double.
  • The Golden Eagles added three more in the ninth for some extra breathing room. The first came on a bases-loaded fielder choice in which everyone was safe. Two more were scored one batter later with a single to right, but Martin was able to laser a throw to Torres at third for the tag to get out of the inning. Mercer added an RBI single up the middle to score Bivens to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Mercer had a strong day at the plate as he had a multiple hit game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Daphney also made the trip around the bases twice and had two extra base hits with an RBI.
  • Torres put together a three-hit day with a run scored, while Bivens went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk.
  • Chase Supensky (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Towson) was charged with the tough-luck loss with just one earned run charged against him.
  • Jason Boak (Jr., Nokesville, Va. / Brentsville / Frederick C.C.) was solid in his first Wilson appearance as he allowed one run on three hits and three walks in 3.0 innings of work.
