(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – It may have been a chilly day in Chambersburg, but that didn't stop Wilson's bats from being hot in Saturday's season opening win against DelVal.
Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) highlighted the day with two home runs including an eighth inning grand slam as the Phoenix pounded out 12 runs on 13 hits.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 12, DelVal 5
Venue: Henninger Field
Records: Wilson 1-0, DelVal 0-1
How It Happened
- Despite the offensive power by the Phoenix, DelVal was the team that struck first with a solo run in the top of the second. Wilson was quick to answer as Tyler O'Brien (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) led off with a base hit up the middle and scored on a Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) triple to right center. Smith then put the Blue and White in front on a sac fly to center.
- Wilson added to its lead with another pair of runs just one inning later. Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) walked to start the frame and eventually scored on a poke by Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) to right. Daphney later made it 4-1 on a bases loaded walk. Two innings later Daphney scored again on a sac fly by Martin. Smith followed up with another RBI on an outfield single that allowed O'Brien to come in.
- The Aggies gained some ground in the top of the sixth with a 3-run homer to left in the top of the sixth, but they were unable to cool off the Phoenix bats as they added another sac fly in the bottom half with Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) scoring. Smith then added his first round trip in the seventh with a blast to left. He lifted off again with the bases juiced the next inning to the same direction to complete the Phoenix scoring.
Inside The Numbers
- Smith finished a monster day by going 4-for-4 with seven RBIs to set a new program record which was previously six set multiple times.
- Daphney also hit 1.000 on the day by going 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
- Martin finished his Wilson debut with two RBI and two runs scored.
- O'Brien joined Daphney and Smith with a multiple-hit day of his own with two runs scored.
- Dallas Gilbert (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / Penn State Harrisburg) started the game on the bump for the Phoenix and recorded the win in his Wilson debut. He struck out three and allowed one run on one hit and four walks in 5.0 innings of work.
