(CAGUAS, Puerto Rico) – Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) led all players with 15 points in Wilson's Puerto Rico Clasico finale, but it wasn't enough as the Phoenix fell to a high-octane Franklin squad Friday. The Grizzlies used balance and depth as 14 different players reached the scoring column to propel them over the Blue and White.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 49, Franklin 80
Venue: Roger Mendoza Coliseo
Records: Wilson 7-5, 2-0 United East; Franklin 7-3, 3-1 HCAC
How It Happened
- Franklin set the tone from the start as it raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (Jr., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) helped spark a push by the Phoenix with a layup and a 3-pointer to get within three at 11-8, but the Grizzlies responded by going on a 12-0 run to close the first.
- The lead grew to 19 before Wilson made another run. Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) scored the next four points on a pair of free throws and a tip-in. Kailee Soto (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Columbia) then added a 3-pointer to make it 29-27 with 7:05 left in the second. Unfortunately that was the closest the Phoenix would get. Franklin pushed the lead back to 19 by halftime and led by at least 18 the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Torres finished with 15 points to lead all players after she went 4-for-9 from the field. It's the seventh time she's scored in double figures this season.
- Laubach recorded back-to-back double-doubles in Puerto Rico with 11 points and 10 rebounds. It's her fifth double-double of the season.
- This was Wilson's first game against a team from Indiana.
