Phoenix Fly Over Squirrels In Season Opener

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – It was a successful season opener for the Wilson women's basketball team as a balanced effort led to a victory over Mary Baldwin on Saturday. Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) and Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) led a quartet of double-figure scorers with 17 points each while two others were a point away from double digits in the win.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 86, Mary Baldwin 61

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 1-0, 0-0 UE; Mary Baldwin 0-1, 0-0 USA South

How It Happened
  • It was an even start for both teams for the opening five minutes before Laubach separated an 11-all tie with a pair of free throws. It sparked a 27-2 run that stretched into the middle of the second quarter that allowed the Phoenix to pull away from the Fighting Squirrels. Isabelle Campbell (FY, Cogan Station, Pa. / Williamsport) helped push the drive with a couple of layups, including one that beat the first quarter buzzer and give the Blue and White a 19-13 lead.
  • Wilson kept firing on all cylinders to start the second. Laubach added to the momentum build with an old-fashioned 3-point play after she was fouled on a layup. Torres continued the strong inside play with back-to-back layups before Black joined the mix with a bunny of her own. Following a couple of more layups by Torres and Laubach, Kailee Soto (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Columbia) showed off the perimeter skills with a 3-pointer to give Wilson a 38-13 lead to end the run. Outside shooting also helped the Fighting Squirrels, but the Phoenix were able to maintain a 20-point lead at the break.
  • The Phoenix got even hotter in the second half as they shot 50% from the field, both overall and behind the arc. Midway through the third Torres scored on a layup to make the score 53-28. On Mary Baldwin's return trip, Soto made a steal which transitioned into a fast break where Black fed Torres for another layup and gave Wilson its largest lead of the night. The Squirrels didn't get any closer than 19 the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Torres was nearly perfect on the night as she went 5-for-5 from the field and 7-of-9 on free throws. She served well distributing the ball with five assists and made four steals defensively.
  • Laubach recorded a double-double as she pulled down 13 rebounds to go with her 17 points. She was 5-for-9 from the field with a 3-pointer. Defensively she posed problems elsewhere with three steals and three blocks.
  • Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / WVU Potomac State) added a double-double herself with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She was 6-for-9 from the field.
  • Black finished with 10 points to round out Phoenix in double-figures.
  • Soto drained three treys for nine points and handed out eight assists.
  • Mary Baldwin's DaVyne Johnson led all players with 25 points. She was 8-for-17 overall and 7-for-11 from 3-point range.
  • Wilson dominated the glass all day and outrebounded the Squirrels 54-26.
