Torres Scores 21 As Phoenix Drop OT Heartbreaker

(BRYN MAWR, Pa.) – A hard-fought game ended in heartbreaking fashion as Wilson was defeated by Bryn Mawr in overtime on Tuesday evening. The Phoenix featured a quartet of double-figure scorers to highlight the night, but the Owls countered with four of their own and had a late surge to force the extra period and pull ahead.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 68, Bryn Mawr 70 (OT)

Venue: Class of 1958 Gymnasium

Records: Wilson 1-1, 0-0 United East; Bryn Mawr 1-1, 0-0 Centennial

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix got off to a hot start with a 15-4 run in the opening quarter that gave them a 15-7 lead. After the Owls opened up with a 3-pointer, Wilson jumped ahead with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) that made the score 4-3. Another Laubach layup made the score 8-7 and was followed by a Chloe Irving (So., Martinsburg, W.Va. / Martinsburg) steal that transitioned into a Kailee Soto (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Columbia) deuce on the fast break. Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) later made it 15-7 after converting the and-one free throw on a made layup. Wilson remained strong in the second and eventually built the lead up to double-digits after Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) made a tip-in just before the half with a 29-18 lead.
  • Offense picked up heavily for both teams in the third quarter. The Phoenix opened up with the first six points to cap a 13-1 run that made the score 35-18 with 8:31 to go in the third. The Owls cut the deficit down to seven before Wilson surged once again largely by getting to the free throw line paired with buckets by Torres, Laubach and Forrester to put the score at 50-34 with 54 seconds left in the third.
  • Bryn Mawr generated some momentum with five points at the end of the frame and that carried into the fourth. Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (Jr., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) and Laubach added early buckets before the Owls went on a 19-3 run to take the lead with 43 seconds left. From there, Torres was able to get the Blue and White back on track with a driving layup where she was fouled and made the and-one free throw to send it to overtime. Torres tied the game once again with a pair of free throws with 51 seconds in the extra frame, but unfortunately the hosts went ahead for good with a jumper on the return trip.
Inside The Numbers
  • Torres had an incredible night with a game-high 21 points. She was 5-for-11 from the field, and had added damage at the free throw line where she was 11-for-14. Defensively she was strong with three steals.
  • Speaking of defense, Laubach had another spectacular game with her second double-double as she put in 11 rebounds to go with her 17 points. She led the team with four steals.
  • Forrester and Caldwell-Degnon each added 11 points for the Blue and White. Forrester joined Laubach with a double-double as she pulled down 12 rebounds.
  • Bryn Mawr had four players in double-figures as well with Jenny Briggs leading the home team with 13 points.
