(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Things have gone pretty well for the Wilson field hockey team the last two weeks as it defeated its third consecutive opponent by a score of 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. The most recent sufferer was Cedar Crest as the Phoenix opened up United East play with three goals in the first quarter and never looked back in their route of the Falcons.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 5, Cedar Crest 0
Venue: Wilson Hockey Field
Records: Wilson 4-5, 1-0 UE; Cedar Crest 2-9, 0-1 UE
How It Happened
- It didn't take long for the Blue and White to get going as Lizzie Landon (Sr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) and Lenoree Hoke (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) fired off early shots which resulted in saves by the Falcons' Shelby Heater in the first two minutes. Kate Seymour (Jr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) then got into the mix a a minute and a half later, and while her first shot was saved, the second one hit paydirt to give the Phoenix the lead 3:13 into the contest.
- Less than three minutes later, Wilson made it 2-0 after taking advantage of a penalty corner. Following the insert by Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road), Seymour found herself with possession once again and sent the ball towards the cage. Landon was able to get a deflection by the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 before the six-minute mark.
- Another penalty corner set up the third goal with Kendall being the beneficiary. After the insert, Kendall was able to position herself in front of the goal and score after a pass from Mikayla Petersen (FY, Glen Burnie, Md. / North County) with 5:48 to go in the frame. Kendall wasn't finished and this time she received assistance from her sister Ginnah Kendall (FY, McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) to make it 4-0 with 4:33 left until halftime.
- The Phoenix had to take care of business on the defensive end as well. While they did control the time of possession for the game, Cedar Crest did find scoring opportunities in the second and third quarters. The Falcons were able to get off two shots in each quarter, but Erin Sullivan (So., Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) made saves on each of them to keep Cedar Crest off the board. Ashley Welker (FY, Norfolk, Va. / Maury) spelled her in the fourth quarter to complete the shutout while Seymour scored a second goal to set up the final score.
