Phoenix Burned By Late Goal At Berks

(READING, Pa.) – Wilson and Penn State Berks met in a defensive battle in United East men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The two teams were deadlocked going down the stretch, but a Nittany Lions goal in the 78th minute provided to be the difference which handed the Phoenix the defeat.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Penn State Berks 1

Venue: Hintz Athletic Fields

Records: Wilson 2-8-2, 0-3-0 UE; Penn State Berks 3-9-0, 2-0-0 UE

How It Happened
  • Action went back and forth at the start with Berks trying to push its attack which resulted in two early offside calls before Callan Stuck took the first shot which needed Logan Neves (Jr., Fredericksburg, Va. / Colonial Forge) to make the stop. Omar Cortez (So., Columbia, Tenn. / Spring Hill) was able to return the favor three minutes later, but it was saved by Josh Martin. Jordan DeVincent (Jr., Eldersburg, Md. / Liberty) and Landon Howe (Jr., Martinsburg, W.Va. / St. Maria Goretti) also had solid chance, but those were saved as well. Stuck and Nicolas Harrison both added chances with Neves making additional saves before the end of the half.
  • Both teams continued looking for the difference maker in the second half with the Phoenix getting the first take, but Jace Williams' (Jr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) shot went high. DeVincent had a couple of more chances, but Berks eventually scored when Stuck scored on a helper from Grant Terridine.
Inside The Numbers
  • Shots were fairly even with Berks holding a slight 12-10 advantage. Shots on goal were fairly close as well with the Nittany Lions on top of a 7-5 difference.
  • DeVincent had the most chances for the Phoenix with four shots overall, two of which were on goal.
  • Despite the result Neves had another impressive game in goal as he matched his season-high of six saves.
