(RICHMOND, Ind.) – A fourth quarter surge changed a previously defensive stalemate into an offensive explosion to give Wilson a shutout victory over Earlham on Sunday. Both teams entered the final period scoreless with a combined four shots evenly split between teams before the Phoenix finally broke through midway through the frame.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 2, Earlham 0
Venue: Darrell Beane Stadium
Records: Wilson 3-1, Earlham 0-4
How It Happened
- The first goal was set up on a penalty corner with 8:33 to go in regulation. Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) took the insert and sent it to Lizzie Landon (Jr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) on the left side. After taking control, Landon sent it to Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercers) on the right side who zipped it inside the far post for the score.
- The Quakers attempted to answer two minutes later and were able to get another pair of shots off, their first since the first quarter. The first by Piper Brill was blocked. Beatrice Meeks followed 11 seconds with another shot in which Erin Sullivan (FY, Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) was able to make the save.
- With 4:40 left on the clock, the Phoenix added an insurance goal on a breakaway. Landon carried possession up the right side and was able to get a centering pass that found Ney in front of the cage. Ney's outstretched reach was able to get a deflection by the goalie for the score.
