Ney's Goal Holds As Phoenix Shuts Out Sweet Briar

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) remained on a hot streak as she scored the lone goal in Wilson's victory over Sweet Briar on Saturday afternoon. Her first quarter score held up as the Phoenix defense recorded its third consecutive shutout.

How It Happened
  • While Wilson largely held the offensive advantage, it was the Vixens who had the early opportunities with the first three shots. Sweet Briar's Ashley Prevet had the first take with Erin Sullivan (FY, Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) making the save while the next two SBC shots were blocked to keep the game scoreless.
  • Wilson benefitted from its first penalty corner as Ney was able to get a shot on target. While it was saved, Hannah Aker (Sr., Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) was able to collect the rebound and find Ney wide open for the goal.
  • Sweet Briar looked to equalize early in the second, but Sullivan saved one shot while another went wide. It was the From there, the Vixens went nearly 25 minutes until their next shot which was also saved by Sullivan with 2:10 left in the third quarter. It also happened to be Sweet Briar's final shot of the game.
  • Looking to build upon its lead, Wilson peppered the Vixens' defense with seven shots in the fourth. Sweet Briar was able to remain in contention as it made saves on four of them, but the Phoenix offensive control helped keep the Vixens from being able to counter.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ney's goal was her sixth of the season and fourth in the last three games. She currently leads the United East for most goals scored.
  • Hailey Steele (Sr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville), Aker, Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road), Lizzie Landon (Jr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) and company were all tenacious with disrupting the Sweet Briar attack and making Sullivan's job easier, especially after the first quarter. The Phoenix defense allowed just one second half shot and now hasn't given up a goal in the last 14 quarters.
  • Wilson outshot Sweet Briar 15-6 overall and 11-3 in shots on goal.
  • Penalty corners were relatively even with the Vixens owning an 8-7 advantage.
