Women's Soccer's Streak Snapped By St. Mary's

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – All good things must come to an end. In this instance, it was the Wilson women's soccer team's best start in program history as the Phoenix fell to St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. It was the conference opener for both teams and the Seahawks showed why they are ranked regionally with a shutout of the Phoenix.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, St. Mary's 3

Venue: Trojan Stadium

Records: Wilson 7-1-2, 0-1-0 UE; St. Mary's 9-1-1, 1-0-0 UE

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's was led by Alyssa McLane and she made her presence felt early as she scored an early goal with an assist from Makayla Mavray in the fifth minute. The Seahawks got off a couple of more shots shortly after with Rebecca Marakovitz (Sr., New Market, Md. / Linganore) providing the save on both.
  • Wilson looked to equalize shortly after as Halley Shaffer (Jr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) had a solid chance in the ninth minute. She was left open on the right side near the corner of the box and fired in a shot, but St. Mary's keeper Kyliegh Bland was able to make the save. Later in the first, a corner kick resulted in a closer encounter with Jade Wolfe (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) crashing the net in the middle. She was able to get a head on the ball, but Bland was there to make the stop again.
  • Four minutes later, St. Mary's used a set piece for its second score. From about 30 yards out on the left side, Brooke Hall sent in a free kick where McLane was able to flick it in for a 2-0 lead. The Seahawks added their final score just over 10 minutes into the second half as McClane completed her hat trick on an assist from Ashlyn Bonner.
Inside The Numbers
  • St. Mary's controlled the tempo for most of the game and fired out 23 shots, 11 of which were on goal with Marakovitz making eight saves. Wilson was limited to five takes, four of which were on target.
  • Shaffer led the attack with two shots with both being on goal.
  • Corners were hard to come by with each team only generating one.
