Phoenix Fall To Harrisburg In Women's Soccer

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's soccer team had a tough task as it ran into a talented Penn State Harrisburg squad in United East action on Wednesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions used a powerful attack and showed why they are one of the top teams in the conference as they shutout the Phoenix.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Penn State Harrisburg 5

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 7-2-2, 0-2-0 UE; Penn State Harrisburg 3-4-3, 1-0-0 UE

How It Happened
  • Although the visitors established the tone early on with an early shot saved by Rebecca Marakovitz (Sr., New Market, Md. / Linganore) just 87 seconds in, Wilson did find a couple opportunities of its own. Annie Smith (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) found space and was able to take a swing with the shot going wide right in the eighth minute. Five minutes later Halley Shaffer (Jr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) had a good look and took an attempt that required a save from Harrisburg's Sydney Mulka.
  • The Nittany Lions kept the pressure up with five more shots over shortly after, and eventually found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Despite the pressure, the Phoenix back line stayed strong and kept the score 1-0 for the rest of the half.
  • Harrisburg added its second goal early in the second half and got stronger as the game went on. The Lions added another in the 65th minute before a penalty kick allowed them to take a 4-0 lead just two minutes later. Another goal in the 79th set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Harrisburg controlled the shot count by a 26-4 margin overall and a 16-2 count in shots on goal.
  • In addition to Smith and Shaffer, Maddy Miller (Jr., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) and Skylar Molnar (Sr., Shohola, Pa. / Delaware Valley) also had shots for the Phoenix.
  • Despite the final, Marakovitz still played a remarkable game and reached a season-best 11 saves in the process. It's a new career-high for her surpassing the 10 she made her first year in a game at Lycoming.
