Williams Scores, But Wilson Falls In Conference Opener

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The United East opener for the Wilson men's soccer team was a thriller, but the Phoenix came up just short of getting a result against visiting St. Mary's. The two battled it out for the full 90 minutes with a second half goal by the Seahawks being the only difference.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, St. Mary's 2

Venue: Trojan Stadium

Records: Wilson 4-6-0, 0-1-0 UE; St. Mary's 2-5-2, 1-0-0 UE

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's started the scoring with a goal by Jack Nelson in the 18th minute. Zach Blaum set up the score as he carried the ball down the right side close to the end line before sending in a centering pass just in front of the goal. Nelson was able to split the Phoenix back line and flick it in for the score.
  • Wilson was quick to answer and pulled even in just over 10 minutes time. Liam Yeatman (Jr., Roseland, Va. / Phoenixville) found himself with possession near midfield and sent up a pass up the middle to Jace Williams (So., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory). After Williams took control, he spun around, lined up, and quickly fired a shot that perfectly placed to the upper left 90 with hardly any room to spare.
  • A set piece set up the Seahawks' second goal early in the second. With a free kick from 29 yards out, Alex Ochman set it up for Tyler Foti to head it into the left side just 3:38 into the frame.
  • Wilson had solid chances to equalize once again with two in the following five minutes. Lazaro Salazar (Sr., Arendtsville, Pa. / Biglerville) had the first with a shot that was saved before Brian Mulholland (Jr., Oracle, Ariz. / Canyon del Oro) had two takes, the first of which was blocked before he controlled the rebound and fired in a second that was also saved. The last chance for the Phoenix came in the 88th minute as Bryson Curtis (So., Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) put a shot on goal that was also saved.
Inside The Numbers
  • St. Mary's led the shot chart by a 21-11 count. Shots on goal were a bit more balanced with the Phoenix being edged out by the Seahawks 10-7.
  • Corner kicks were strongly in favor of the visitors with a 13-1 margin.
  • Williams' goal was his first of the season.
  • Logan Neves (So., Fredericksburg, Va. / Colonial Forge) finished with eight saves on the day, just one shy of his season high. It's the third game he's had at least eight saves this season.
Up Next
Wilson will make the short trek up I-81 to take on Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday. Kickoff with the Nittany Lions is set for 7 p.m.
