Wilson Rolls To Third-Straight Win Against Mont Alto

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson men's soccer team rolled to its third-straight win as it shutout nearby Penn State Mont Alto on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix dominated the pace of play and used that to score three goals in the first half en route to the win.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 4, Penn State Mont Alto 0

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 4-5, 0-0 UE; Penn State Mont Alto 1-6, 1-0 PSUAC

How it Happened
  • The Phoenix didn't waste any time getting the offense firing as they reeled off three shots in the opening 10 minutes. Six more shots followed before Omar Cortez (FY, Columbia, Tenn. / Spring Hill) eventually broke through in the 28th minute. Cortez took control on the left side of the box before heading to the middle where a swift right foot found the back of the net on the near post.
  • It didn't take long for Wilson to find the back of the net once again. In fact, it took only 74 seconds as this time Eric Arbogast (So., Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) took control of a loose ball near the top of the box and rocketed in a shot that deflected off a Nittany Lions defender.
  • Almost 11 minutes later Brian Plamp (FY, Locust Grove, Va. / Orange County) hit paydirt on a beautiful cross from Luis Jimenez (So., Carabobo, Venezuela / Taylor Allderdice) on the left side. That gave Wilson a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • The offensive pressure remained alive in the second half with Wilson finding the back of the net once more just eight minutes in as Ian Ruiz (Gr., Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico /  Colegio Santa Maria del Camino) and Jackson Bennet (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) got on the score sheet. Bennet carried the ball to the left corner before sending in a cross where Ruiz was waiting in the middle of the box. Ruiz was able to get a flick on it just before the Mont Alto keeper to cap the scoring.
  • While the visitors' chances were few and far between, they did have four shots in the game with three requiring saves. Logan Neves (So., Fredericksburg, Pa. / Colonial Forge) started the game and made one before Vincent Natale (Jr., Mt. Airy, Md. / Linganore) spelled him in the second half and made the other two.
Inside The Numbers
  • The win gives Wilson its first three game win streak in program history. The Phoenix previously had a three-game unbeaten streak in 2021 with a 2-1 win over Clarks Summit and a 2-0 win over Valley Forge before a scoreless draw with St. Elizabeth.
  • The aforementioned games against Valley Forge and St. Elizabeth are also the last time the Phoenix posted back-to-back shutouts.
  • Six different players registered points for the Blue and White. It's the most since six also recorded points in a 5-1 win at Valley Forge last season on October 17.
  • Ruiz, Cortez, and Arbogast all scored their first goal of the season. For Cortez and Arbogast, it was their first career goal as well.
  • The four wins gives Wilson its most wins since the 2019 season.
Up Next
Wilson will attempt to pull even on the season as it hosts St. Mary's College of Maryland for a men's and women's doubleheader. The men's game is slated for 3:30 p.m., approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest.
