(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's volleyball team fell short in a hard-fought match against visiting Randolph on Saturday afternoon in the Gannett Field House. The Phoenix and WildCats squared off in a tight first set, but the visitors got stronger from there to take the sweep.
The Basics
Scores: Wilson 0, Randolph 3 (25-20, 25-15, 25-13)
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 0-11, 0-0 UE; Randolph 8-5, 1-1 ODAC
How It Happened
- Wilson opened up the contest on a hot start with a 6-1 rally thanks to and incredible start by Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) who struck down two kills before three-straight aces. While the WildCats climbed back to within one, kills from Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin), Alison Daniels (FY, Lititz, Pa. / Warwick), and Amelia Edens (Sr., Pasadena, Md. / Glen Burnie) helped put the Phoenix back on top 12-7. Later Menedis added three kills sandwiched around a block by Edens and Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) to make it 20-14. Unfortunately, it went south from there as the visitors reeled off 11 consecutive points to steal the first set.
- That momentum fed into the second as Randolph created separation early with an 11-5 start. A Garcelon kill before two more aces by her put Wilson within contention, but Randolph once again closed the frame with a strong finish to go up 2-0.
- The third started out competitive before the WildCats again closed the set with a strong run. Kills by Menedis and Niki Schussler (Sr., Chambersburg, Cumberland Valley Christian) tied the game at 9-all and 10-all before Randolph took the lead for good with the next two points. Another Menedis attack made it 12-11 before the WildCats caught fire to close the match.
Inside The Numbers
- Menedis had one of her better days of the season as she led all players with 11 kills. She did so on 26 attacks with four errors for a hitting percentage of .269. She also led on the receiving end with eight digs.
- Moreland had a balanced game with five kills, five digs, and three aces.
- The Phoenix scored more kills than the WildCats by a 27-26 margin, but Randolph held an large edge on aces 14-6 and blocks 8-2.
