Women's Soccer Scores Shutout On Senior Day

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Senior Day was a success for the Wilson women's soccer team as it recorded yet another clean sheet in competition with Gwynedd Mercy Saturday afternoon. Halley Shaffer (Jr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) scored twice and Annie Smith (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) added another while a senior laden defense kept the visitors' chances few and far between.

Erin Roszkowiak (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson), Julia Elliott (Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck), Jade Wolfe (Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan), Elizabeth Camplese (Harrisburg, Pa. / Cedar Cliff), Skylar Molnar (Shohola, Pa. / Delaware Valley), Kayla Richards (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown), Rachel Coulter (Woodbridge, Va. / Garfield), Rebecca Marakovitz (New Market, Md. / Linganore), Bianca Sommers (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg), and Marlyn Soto-Velasquez were all honored prior to the game for Senior Day festivities.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 3, Gwynedd Mercy 0

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 6-0-2, 0-0-0 UE; Gwynedd Mercy 3-3-2, 0-0-0

How It Happened
  • It didn't take long for the Phoenix to heat up as they scored two goals in the opening 15 minutes. Smith did the honors of lighting up the scoreboard first with a dribble and drive before a hard shot off the right foot in the ninth minute. Just over five minutes later Shaffer also went around the Griffins defense before using the left foot for a laser for the 2-0 lead.
  • Gwynedd Mercy attempted to answer once play resumed and found its first shot on goal, but Roszkowiak picked up the save just inside the 17th minute. Thanks another stellar effort of a backline that featured Elliott, Wolfe, Molnar, Richards, Sydney Bradshaw (So., Annandale, Va. / Stonebridge), and more, it was the only time Roszkowiak was tested in the half.
  • The second half played similar to the first in that the Phoenix scored early while using a suffocating defense and midfield to limit the visitors' chances. On the opposite end Shaffer and Smith were responsible for the third goal of the game just under 14 minutes into the half. Shaffer scored on a hard strike in the middle of the field after she received Smith's pass up the middle of the field.
  • The Griffins' last decent chance came in the 80th minute as Ksenia Semenovykh took a shot. This time Marakovitz made the stop to keep the sheet clean.
Inside The Numbers
  • Shaffer's goals give her five for the season as she leads the team with 11 points. Smith is right behind her with nine points after her fourth goal and first assist of the year.
  • Shaffer's goals giver her 80 points for her career.
  • Smith's goal was also the 20th of her career. Her assist puts her at 50 points for her career as well.
  • The Blue and White have now shutout seven of eight opponents to start the season and 12 of 14 regular season opponents dating back to last year.
  • Wilson splits its home-and-home with GMU after narrowly falling to the Griffins 3-2 last season. Smith scored both goals for the Phoenix in that contest.
  • Wilson outshot its opponents 15-6 in the contest and 9-2 in shots on goal. Corner kicks also favored the Phoenix 6-3.
Up Next
Wilson was scheduled to host Penn State Mont Alto on Monday, but that game has been postponed. The Phoenix will now prep for another Penn State branch as Schuylkill visits Kris's Meadow on Wednesday. Kickoff with the Nittany Lions is set for 5 p.m.
