Phoenix Fall To Pitt Greensburg In Volleyball Action

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) pounded out 11 kills and picked up seven digs, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Pitt Greensburg in non-conference action on Labor Day. The Phoenix battled with the Bobcats for most of the day only to see the visitors pull away at the end of each set.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Pitt Greensburg 3 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18)

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 0-2, Pitt Greensburg 1-4

How It Happened
  • The Blue and White looked to come out of the gate fast with kills from Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) and Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) for an early lead, but the didn't let them get out too far ahead and eventually came back with three kills en route to a 6-4 advantage. A Menedis kill, an ace from Addie Hebert (So., Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg), and a Pitt error on consecutive plays put Wilson back in front, but a 4-0 run by the Bobcats put them in front for good. Wilson was able to get back within two at 16-14 before Pitt scored the next four and maintained momentum for the first set win.
  • The Bobcats opened up the second with a 7-2 lead, but Wilson remained composed and bounced back to tie things up with the next five points. Garcelon added a pair of aces in the rally and assisted on a Menedis kill during the stretch. The set was even through the first 20 points and saw the Phoenix within one at 15-14 before the Bobcats started to pull away with five of the next six points. Kills by Moreland and Garcelon helped Wilson stay close at 23-20 before Pitt scored the next two for a 2-0 lead.
  • Another back-and-forth start saw the teams even at 8-all after a pair of Bobcat errors. The Bobcats started to take control afterwards with a 5-0 run capped by a pair of Mia Stohon kills, and althought kills from Niki Schussler (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) and Moreland helped Wilson get back within two, Pitt returned serve with the next three points which started a 7-1 run. A 5-2 stretch by the Phoenix put the third set at 22-17 before Greensburg scored three of four to end the contest.
Inside The Numbers
  • Menedis finished the match with match-best 11 kills on 24 attempts and a hitting percentage of .250. Defensively she led the back line with seven digs as did Michaela Windisch (So., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin). Windisch was also busy on the offensive side as one of the two main setters with 12 assists.
  • Garcelon was the other player setting up the attack with 11. She added four kills three aces, and a block to her stat line as well.
