Women's Volleyball Taken Down By Altoona

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's volleyball team closed a long opening weekend of games with a contest against Penn State Altoona on Tuesday evening. A deep Nittany Lions roster proved too much for the Phoenix as the visitors were able to take the contest in straight sets.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Penn State Altoona 3 (25-14, 25-18, 25-16)

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 0-3, Penn State Altoona 2-3

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix were able to stick with the Nittany Lions in the early stages and trailed 8-7 after a trio of quick errors by the Lions. Altoona was quick the rebound, however, with an 11-2 run to go up 19-9. While Wilson scored the next four after that, the deficit was too much for the Phoenix to overcome.
  • Kills from Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) and Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) sandwiched around an Altoona error helped Wilson take an early 3-0 lead for set 2. Unfortunately the visitors bounced back to take a five-point lead before the Blue and White scored back-to-back points again on a pair of Altoona errors. A late charge led by a Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. ) kill put the Phoneix within six at 22-16 before Altoona took a 2-0 lead.
  • Another quick start by the Phoenix saw them go up 4-1 thanks to an ace from Moreland and a pair of Menedis kills. After a Moreland kill put Wilson even at 6-all, Penn State Altoona scored a 7-0 run for a 13-6 lead. Wilson mounted a late charge before Altoona closed the game and evening with the final three points.
Inside the Numbers
  • Menedis and Moreland both led the team with six kills. Both were also among the defensive leads as Moreland picked up 14 digs.
  • Moreland was solid on the service line as she put down three aces.
  • Michaela Windisch (So., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) set up the attack with 11 assists, while Garcelon added seven.
  • Penn State Altoona was led by Lia Simanski with 10 kills. She led a group of four player to register at least six kills. Three of them had at least eight.
Up Next
Wilson will head to Winchester, Virginia, to take on Hood, Mary Baldwin and Richmond in a busy weekend.
