Phoenix Dethrone Royals With Offensive Fireworks

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Six different players recorded points as Wilson defeated Eastern Mennonite thanks to an offensive explosion. Despite an early goal by the Royals, the Phoenix were quick to answer and inundated the visitors on the attacking end for most of the game.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 4, Eastern Mennonite 1

Venue: Wilson Hockey Field

Records: Wilson 5-1, 0-0 UE; Eastern Mennonite 0-7, 0-0 ODAC

How It Happened
  • After a scoreless first quarter, EMU opened the scoring as Katie Tanous took advantage of a slippery field. As the Wilson defense attempted to switch ends of the field, a player slipped leaving Tanous on a breakaway for the score. Other than that, the Phoenix defense was in lockdown mode and refused to yield another shot the rest of the way.
  • On the opposite side, the Phoenix attack wasted no time in equalizing with a goal of their own. Kate Seymour (So., Churchton, Md. / Southern) did the honors and was able to pound in the goal just 48 seconds later. Wilson wasn't finished as a penalty corner left Hannah Aker (Sr., Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) wide open in the middle after Payton Kendall's (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) insert. Aker's shot blew by the Royals' defense and gave the home team the lead another 36 seconds after tying the game.
  • The second half belonged entirely to the Blue and White of Wilson. While the bulk of the Wilson corners and shots were thwarted, persistence eventually paid off at the end of the period. Lizzie Landon (Jr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) received a corner and avoided a defender to send in a shot that snuck through the Royal's defense which resulted in a goal as time expired in the third.
  • Midway through the fourth, Wilson was able to put in the final goal of the game. Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) set up the play with a centering pass from the right side. Brea Kelso (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) received it and took a reverse shot and squeezed between the left post and the keeper.
Inside The Numbers
  • This was the first game that Wilson had at least six different players record a point since October 14, 2023, when the Phoenix defeated Meredith 7-2 at home.
  • Seymour found the back of the cage for the third time this season and the first time since scoring a pair against Oberlin.
  • Aker's go-ahead goal as well as the scores from Landon and Kelso were their first of the season.
  • Since dropping the first game these two teams played back in 2016, Wilson has won four consecutive contests in the series.
  • The Wilson attack controlled the tempo almost the entire time and outshot the Royals 37-1. All but seven of the Phoenix shots were on goal. Corners also heavily leaned in favor of the Phoenix by a 26-3 margin.
Up Next
