Phoenix Defense Rises Up With Sixth Shutouts at Hood

(FREDERICK, Md.) – Another scoreless draw kept the Wilson women's soccer team unbeaten as it battled local rival Hood on Tuesday. The two teams traded blows as they evenly split 24 shots with goalkeepers for both teams keeping the scoreboard blank.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Hood 0

Venue: Thomas Athletic Field

Records: Wilson 5-0-2, Hood 1-2-3

How It Happened
  • Wilson looked to get off to a hot start as Annie Smith (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) fired off the first shot just over three minutes into the game, but it was the Blazers' Brenna Ellenberger who made the early save. Hood eventually countered 12 minutes later with its first shot only to see Rebecca Marakovitz (Sr., New Market, Md. / Linganore) make the stop.
  • The Phoenix peppered the Blazers' defense three more times in the first with two more saves by the hosts. On the opposite end Marakovitz added another stop just before Hood had another close call with a shot that went off the crossbar.
  • The Wilson attack stepped up its pressure to open the second half with five shots in the first 13 minutes, but only Maddy Miller (Jr., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) was able to get one on target for another Ellenberger save. Hood's first shot on goal in the second came in the 67th minute with Madison Ebersole (FY, Big Pool, Md. / Clear Springs) providing the stop. She added a second save 10 minutes later that opened up a stretch of four shots in five minutes for the Blazers, but the final three either went high or wide left. Wilson had two last opportunities in the final minutes with Smith's shot being saved in the 87th followed by one from Miller in the 90th.
Inside The Numbers
  • Marakovitz and Ebersole combined for Wilson's sixth clean sheet of the season to continue Wilson's best start in program history. Both keepers made two saves on the day.
  • They were supported by the back line of Julia Elliott (Sr., Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck), Jade Wolfe (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan), Skylar Molnar (Sr., Shohola, Pa. / Delaware Valley), Savanna Mackie (FY, Hanover, Pa. / Southwestern), Autumn DiCandilo (FY, Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton), and Reilly Ryan (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora).
  • While shots were even at 12-all, the Phoenix led 7-4 in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks were few and far between with Wilson registering two to Hood's one.
  • The result snapped a six-game losing streak to the Blazers dating back to 2005.
  • Smith paced the Wilson attack with half of the shots coming from her. Of those six, three were on goal.
