Men's Soccer Downed By Goucher

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson's bid to knock Goucher from the ranks of the unbeatens came up short as the two squared off on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The Gophers benefitted from goals in both halves while limiting the Phoenix offense en route to the victory.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Goucher 2

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 1-4, Goucher 3-0-2

How It Happened
  • The opening 10 minutes was a defensive stalemate before Goucher eventually got off a pair of shots with Logan Neves (So., Fredericksburg, Pa. / Colonial Forge) making the save on one. Landon Howe (So., Martinsburg, W.Va. / St. Maria Goretti) was able to serve up Wilson's first shot four minutes later, but it too was saved.
  • Goucher eventually broke through in the 22nd minute as Anthony Ketelson was able to sneak past Neves. Jonathan Alvarado send a pass up midfield as Ketelson got by the back line and went to the lower left 90 for the score. The visitors were able to get off three more shots on goal in the first with Neves making two saves and the defense coming up big in another stop.
  • On the opposite side, Lazaro Salazar (Sr., Ardentsville, Pa. / Biglerville) was able to get a shot off for the Blue and White, but it went wide left. Another opportunity saw the Phoenix on a breakaway with a hard shot inside the right post, but it was deemed to have been out of bounds on the end line before the shot was taken.
  • Wilson remained on the hunt for an equalizer in the second and saw Liam Yeatman (Jr., Roseland, Va. / Phoenixville) fire off a shot that was saved by Ale Sternini and Bryson Curtis (So., Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) sail one over the top. The Gophers were able to flip the field and counter immediately after which resulted in Aquila De Carvalho on the left side of the box. After dribbling around the defense he was able to score on the near post to put his team up 2-0 in the 59th. Wilson's chances were limited to three shots the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
  • Despite the final, Neves played an incredible game that saw him chalk up nine saves for a new season high.
  • Goucher outshot the Phoenix 20-8. Of those, 15 were on goal with Wilson totaling 13 saves as a team.
  • The Gophers led the corner kicks count as well by an 8-4 margin.
