Women's Soccer Scores Second-Straight Shutout

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A stellar goal by Halley Shaffer (Jr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) in the middle of the first half stood up as Wilson completed a perfect opening weekend with a shutout of Mary Baldwin on Sunday. It was the second clean sheet in as many games as the Phoenix gear up for their first road trip of the regular season on Tuesday.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, Mary Baldwin 0

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 2-0, Mary Baldwin 0-2

How It Happened
  • The pace of play was balanced in the early moments with both teams getting shots on target in the opening 20 minutes. The Fighting Squirrels had the first as Sara Gruntowicz fired away just inside the 11th minute with Erin Roszkowiak (Sr., Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson) making the save. Five minutes latter Annie Smith (So., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) returned the favor with a take to the bottom center with MBU's Maddy Vinson making the stop.
  • The Blue and White hit paydirt not too long after that as Shaffer created some magic from the left side of the offensive zone. Maintaining possession and heading towards the center outside the top of the box, she zipped a shot to the lower left 90 just between the post and Vinson's outstretched diving hands for the goal in the 22nd minute.
  • While the score held up, it was tested often in the second half by a Mary Baldwin group looking to pull even. Roszkowiak stopped a pair of takes 46 seconds apart in the opening five minutes and added another save in the 64th on a 1-on-0 opportunity. Three minutes later the Squirrels had another shot go off the crossbar.
  • The Phoenix attack revived in the final 10 with five shots. Four were on goal, but all stopped by Vinson. Despite not finding the back of the net again, it helped Wilson run out the rest of the clock to secure the win.
Inside The Numbers
  • Shaffer's score was her first of the season and 35th of her career, already a program record in her junior season.
  • Roszkowiak went the distance to record the second clean sheet of her career. She made eight saves – a new personal best – on 16 shots faced.
  • While Mary Baldwin outshot the Phoenix 16-11, shots on goal were more even with the Squirrels on the high end of an 8-7 count. Wilson was still able to put on the pressure and led in corner kicks 8-2.
  • This was the first meeting in five years between the two squads. Mary Baldwin leads the series that started in 2003 7-6 with the Blue and White coming out victorious in four of the last five.
