Phoenix Firewall: Wilson Women Block Out Mounties

(CRESSON, Pa.) – Wilson remained unbeaten as it record its third clean sheet in as many games with a scoreless draw against hosting Mount Aloysius on Tuesday. It's the best defensive start for the Phoenix since 2016 when the Blue and White opened the year 4-0 with four shutouts.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 0, Mount Aloysius 0

Venue: Kelly Field

Records: Wilson 2-0-1, Mount Aloysius 0-1-1

How It Happened
  • For the third consecutive game, the Wilson back line of Sydney Bradshaw (So., Annandale, Va. / Stonebridge), Julia Elliott (Sr., Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck), Gretchen Turner (Jr., York, Pa. / Northeastern), Jade Wolfe (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan), Reilly Ryan (FY, Frederick, Md.), and Skylar Molnar (Sr., Shohola, Pa. / Delaware Valley) played impeccable defense. The Mounties struggled to generate any offense and were held without a shot until the 27th minute of the game. Mount Aloysius were only allowed four for the half with only one on goal which was diverted away by Madison Ebersole (FY, Big Pool, Md.).
  • On the opposite end Wilson struck up some opportunities out of the gate as Bianca Sommers (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) had a pair of shots in the first 12 minutes. The first went left while the second was saved by Mounties keeper McKenna Meadows. Kayla Richards (Jr., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) added another shot on goal in the 17th, but it too was stopped by Meadows.
  • The Phoenix back line was even more stout in the second half. Despite the hosts getting a shot seven minutes into the frame, they were limited to just two the rest of the way. The back line made it easy for Ebersole as well as she was only required to make one save.
Inside The Numbers
  • The Phoenix have recorded their three shutouts to open the season with three different goalkeepers.
  • Dating back to last season, Wilson has shut out eight of its last nine regular season opponents.
  • Both defenses were on display as the Phoenix and Mounties combined for a 7-6 shot margin led by the hosts. Wilson was on the upper hand of a 3-2 shots on goal count.
  • Teams were nearly even on corner kicks as well with Mount Aloysius up 5-4 on the set pieces.
