(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Deah Menedis (Sr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) registered 11 kills in the season opener, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Penn State York on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix battled throughout and were able to take the third set away from the Nittany Lions, but the visitors were able to pull away in the fourth for the win.

How It Happened
  • The start of the match saw the two teams go back and forth until the Nittany Lions used a 5-0 run to jump ahead 11-6. The Phoenix used kills from Amelia Edens (Sr., Pasadena, Md. / Glen Burnie), Alison Daniels (FY, Lititz, Pa. / Warwick), and Menedis to construct a 4-0 run to climb back within five at 20-15 before York punched out five of the next seven for a 1-0 lead.
  • A block by Allyson Garcelon (Jr., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) gave Wilson an early 4-3 lead in the second, but York took control from there with 10 of the next 12 points. The visitors retained at least a six-point lead and took a 2-0 lead after scoring the final six points of the set.
  • While York opened up the third with the first three points, Wilson's attack caught fire with a 10-0 run. Nikki Schussler (Sr., ), Menedis, and Garcelon all contributed to the push with kills while Abby Moreland (So., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) capped the rally with an ace. The Phoenix remained in control throughout to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • After splitting the first eight points, York created separation with a 6-1 run with three kills from Sadie Schantz. Wilson climbed back within two on kills from Edens and Menedis, but the Nittany Lions were able to keep them at arm's length. The Phoenix had a late 6-1 run late, but it was too late as York scored the match point on the next play with a kill from Olivia Giltner.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson held the advantage in points at 47-46, aces at 9-7, and blocks at 6-4.
  • In addition to Menedis' 11 kills, Schussler and Garcelon added six and five, respectively.
  • Michaela Windisch (So., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) was the primary setter with 18 assists on the day. Garcelon was one away from double figures.
  • Moreland hit double figures defensively with 10 digs. Garcelon was also a force up front with four blocks. Edens added a pair.
