Ney Scores OT Winner In Season Opener

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – Paige Ney (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) scored with 2:31 left in overtime to give Wilson a season-opening victory over host Washington & Jefferson on Friday evening. It was the junior's second of the game and gave the Phoenix their eighth consecutive season opening triumph.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 2, Washington & Jefferson 1 (OT)

Venue: Cameron Stadium

Records: Wilson 1-0, Washington & Jefferson 0-1

How It Happened
  • Midway through the first quarter, Wilson was able to trike first when Brea Kelso (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) centered the ball from the left side to find Kate Seymour (So., Churchton, Md. / Southern) on the far post. Seymour had multiple chances from almost point-blank range, but the Presidents' goalkeeper was able to keep the ball in play. Ney was able to come up with a rebound and had a couple takes herself. After the first one was stopped, she was able to stuff it inside the near post to give the Blue and White the lead.
  • Lightning halted play in the middle of the second period for nearly an hour. Once play resumed, the Presidents were able to pull even with a shot from the right side that squeezed just inside the far post with 2:24 before the half.
  • Both defenses stepped up in the second half. Wilson's back line allowed only one shot for the rest of regulation, while W&J staved away four Wilson attempts before overtime started.
  • Wilson kept the pressure on in the overtime period and finally broke through with 2:31 left on the clock. Ney did the honors after she received a pass from Seymour and went inside the left post once again to score the victory.
Inside The Numbers
  • Ney's two goals give her 30 for her career. It was her fifth multiple-goal game of her career.
  • Wilson controlled the pace of play for most of the game and outshot the Presidents 11-4. The Blue and White held a 6-3 advantage in shots and an 11-5 lead in corners as well.
  • Erin Sullivan (FY, Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) and Ryleigh Mullins (So., Aldi, Va. / John Champe) split time in goal with each keeper making a save.
