(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Two late second-half goals spoiled an otherwise solid season opener for the Wilson men's soccer team Friday afternoon. The Phoenix and visiting Hood went scoreless for 65 minutes before the visitors pulled away late.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Hood 2
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 0-1, Hood 1-0
How It Happened
- The opening score came on a counterattack by the Blazers in the 66th minute. After taking control of the ball and pushing up the middle of the field, an inadvertent hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the visitors. Goalkeeper Logan Neves (So., Fredericksburg, Va. / Colonial Forge) guessed the correct side, but Anthony Polio was able to send it by his outstretched arms to the lower left 90.
- Teams exchanged shots in the final 10 minutes with Brian Mulholland (Jr., Oracle, Ariz. / Canyon del Oro) giving the Phoenix a good opportunity to pull even just in front of the goal, but the Blazers came up with a critical defensive save.
- Three minutes later the Blazers added an insurance goal to set up the final score. Polio was behind this score as well as he headed it inside the right post on an assist from Jonathan Fuentes from the left side with 1:48 left in regulation.
Inside The Numbers
- Shots were relatively even throughout the contest with Hood holding an 11-9 advantage at the end of the day. The bulk of those came in the second half with nine takes compared to six by the Phoenix. Wilson did have the advantage in shots on goal with six to the Blazers' five.
- This was just the third meeting all-time between the two programs. The last time they squared off was a 0-0 draw in Frederick during the 2022 season.
- Neves finished the day with three saves.
- Luis Jimenez (So., Carabobo, Venezuela / Taylor Allderdice) led the Blue and White attack with four shots on the day. Two were on goal.
