Softball Stays Strong With Sweep of Defenders

(CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.) – The Wilson softball team remained unbeaten in Skye Division play as it eclipsed Clarks Summit in both games of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Phoenix received strong play across the board as Rylee Piper (FY, Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) threw a five-hit shutout in the opener while the offense pounded out 13 hits in the win.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1- Wilson 4, Clarks Summit 0
Game 2 – Wilson 11, Clarks Summit 7

Venue: Clarks Summit Softball Field

Records: Wilson 14-7, 6-0 Skye; Clarks Summit 7-11-1, 1-3 Skye

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Wilson opened the scoring in the top of the first as Alyssa Wenger (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) scored after an infield error. That was all that Piper needed as she shut down the Defenders' bats for the duration.
  • Meanwhile the Phoenix stayed dedicated at the plate. Haiden Brookens (Sr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) took one for the team and eventually scored on a base hit by Brookens. One batter later Barker grounded out to the pitcher, but not before Lindsey Dalenberg (FY, Niles, Mich. / Edwardsburg) scored to make it 3-0.
  • Madison Heuer (Jr., Greencastle, Pa. / Boonsboro) put the finishing touches offensively as she drove in Caitlin Olivero (FY, Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) with the bases loaded. Piper was then able to get a double play and a line out in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Bats were ablaze for both teams to start the game as each squad posted three in the first. For Wilson, Taylor Barker (Sr., Chehalis, Wash. / WF West) hit a three-run blast that scored Waverly Moffett (FY, Westminster, Md. / Winter Mill) and Dalenberg for the quick lead. The Defenders answered by loading the bases and scored on a hit by pitch, a walk, and a fielder's choice to pull even.
  • The Phoenix were unfazed and quickly regained the lead. Heuer opened the frame with reaching safely on an error and worked her way around the bases to eventually score on a passed ball. Wenger then made it 5-3 on another passed ball.
  • After a scoreless third Wilson piled on three more runs on four extra base hits in the fourth. Wenger led off with a triple and scored on the next play as Dalenberg grounded out. Back-to-back doubles by Moffett and Barker then made it 7-3. Abigail Evans (FY, Muncy, Pa. / Warrior Run) followed with a triple to right field to score Barker.
  • Wenger added a double in the fifth to score Heuer for a 9-3 lead. Another double by Madison Briggs (So., Lock Haven,  Pa. / Central Mountain) scored Caitlin Oliviero (FY, Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) in the sixth. Kiera O'Brine (FY, Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) added a sacrifice fly one batter later for an 11-3 advantage. The Defenders added one in the bottom of the frame to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Barker improved her hit streak to 17 games after she went a combined 3-for-8. Both Game 2 hits were huge as they drove in four runs and gave her five for the day.
  • Elena Worthington (FY, Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) recorded the win in Game 2 for the Phoenix. She allowed just one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of relief work.
  • In addition to Barker, Wenger, Dalenberg, Moffett, Evans, and Riley Henry (Jr., Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) all had multiple hit games in Game 2.
