Phoenix Downs Defenders In Doubleheader Finale

(DUNMORE, Pa.) – The end of the regular season ended on a high note for Wilson as it swept the day and the series from Clarks Summit. The Phoenix posted 12 runs in both contests with 16 different players recording hits on the day.

It wasn't all offense driven, however. Chase Supensky (So., Baltimore, Md. / Towson) highlighted an incredible effort by the battery in Game 2 as he limited the Defenders to just two hits to record his fourth win of the season.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 12, Clarks Summit 4
Game 2 – Wilson 12, Clarks Summit 1 (7 Innings)

Venue: Schautz Stadium

Records: Wilson 19-15, 13-5 Skye; Clarks Summit 4-34, 2-16 Skye

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • As was the case in Friday's opener, scoring for the Phoenix occurred early and often. A walk by Haden Hoff (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Westminster) and a base hit by Harry Middlebrooks (FY, Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) set up Jordan McKenzie (Sr., White Plains, Md. / North Point) who singled in Hoff for the first run. Jordan Daphney (Jr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Middlebrooks for a 2-0 lead.
  • The floodgates opened from there as Wilson hit around the lineup and posted nine runs. The Blue and White started the inning by loading the bases and Ryan Torres (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) took advantage with a double that brought in Kade Linton (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) and Peyton Taylor (Sr. Worton, Md. / Kent County). Hoff cleaned up with a three-run home run to put the score at 7-0. Middlebrooks scored on a double steal, Brady Andre (Sr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) hit in McKenzie, and a Taylor home run capped the scoring.
  • The Defenders sparked some offense in the third and fifth innings as Tanner Smith's bat started to heat up. In both cases he left the yard for two-run home runs to put the score at 11-4. Any hopes of a comeback ended after that, and Wilson added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as another double steal allowed Jack Pachella (So., Wayne, Pa. / Radnor) to score to set up the final margin.
  • Emilio Rodriguez (So., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) got the win in the opener for his first win of the season. He fanned eight in 4.0 innings of work.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • While the offense got it done with 12 more runs in the regular season finale, the defense was also on display with just two hits by the Defenders. Supensky was dealing heat as he struck out seven of the 20 batters he faced through 6.0 innings. He recorded the win to improve to 4-1 on the year. Adrian Lugo (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico / Manuel Cruz Maceira) relieved him in the seventh and pitched a perfect frame with one punchout to end the game.
  • Offensively the Phoenix retained their ways from previously in the series with a strong start. Tyler Smith (FY, Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) doubled in Middlebrooks and Daphney for a 2-0 lead in the first before scoring himself on a Taylor groundout. Ryan Green (Sr., Fulton, Md. / Resevoir) made the trip around the bases with Hoff bringing him home on a base hit in the second for a 4-0 lead.
  • Three more runs followed in the third with Justin Fleig (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) getting the proverbial ball rolling on a base hit that scored Smith. A double steal followed which allowed Taylor to score from third, and Trent Strohecker (FY, Halifax, Pa. / Halifax) hit in Fleig on a base hit.
  • Fleig and Strohecker weren't done as they were responsible for three more runs in the fourth. Fleig hit a two-out double to score Smith and Middlebrooks for a 9-0 lead, and Strohecker added another RBI single to bring in Taylor.
  • After Clarks Summit scored its only run in the fourth, the Phoenix got it back in the fifth as Brady Bakner (Sr., Waynesboro, Pa. / Scotland Campus) left the ballpark in the top of the fifth. Bakner got a second RBI in the seventh by hitting in Gage Goss (So., Holiday, Fla. / Anclote).
Inside The Numbers
  • The music was playing all of Wilson's hits as 12 different players had at least one in Game 1. An additional four
  • Bakner, Daphney, Fleig, Hoff, McKenzie, Middlebrooks, Strohecker, and Taylor all had multiple hits on the day. Daphney led the team with four hits across both games with a .500 average. McKenzie, Middlebrooks, and Taylor added three hits each.
  • Six players had multiple RBI on the afternoon. Hoff did the most damage with four while Fleig and added three. Taylor scored four times on the day while Smith made the trip around the bases thrice.
