(LA PLUME, Pa.) – Emilio Rodriguez (So., Baltimore, Md. / Arcbishop Curley) pitched his finest game of the season as he struck out 10 in Wilson's Skye Division tournament victory over No. 2 Cairn on Friday afternoon.
Adrian Lugo (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico / Manuel Cruz Maciera) came in to strike out two more in a perfect ninth inning to secure a two-hit shutout as the Phoenix move on in the winners' bracket.
The Basics
Score: No. 3 Wilson 3, No. 2 Cairn 0
Venue: Christy Mathewson Field
Records: Wilson 20-15, Cairn 24-16
How It Happened
- While it was a low-scoring affair, Wilson wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard with a first inning run. Jordan Daphney (Jr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) did the honors as he doubled down the right field line to score Jordan McKenzie (Sr., White Planes, Md. / North Point) who reached on an infield single.
- The score remained dormant until the Blue and Whited plated their second in the fifth. Haden Hoff (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Westminster) set himself up in scoring position after belting a pitch to right field for a double. After a balk put him on third, Harry Middlebrooks (FY, Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) eased him in on a base hit to left center.
- Kade Linton (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) provided some insurance in the top of the ninth. He led off with a liner up the middle and moved to second on an error during the next at-bat. A fly out to left allowed him to get to third before a wild pitch gave him the final 90.
Inside The Numbers
- The Wilson battery struck out multiple Highlanders in five of the seven innings.
- Daphney was perfect on the day with a 4-for-4 day from the plate. Two of them went for doubles as he added an RBI as well.
- Hoff and Linton both had multiple-hit days. Hoff joined Daphney in drilling a pair of doubles.
- Rodriguez improved to 2-3 on the season.
- Lugo's save was his second of the season. He is averaging a strikeout every innings.
- Wilson improved to 13-8 all-time against the Highlanders. This includes a 7-1 mark in postseason games.
