Lacrosse Falls On Late Goal at Bryn Athyn

(BRYN ATHYN, Pa.) – A rematch of last year's conference championship went down to the wire, but a late goal doomed Wilson as it fell to Bryn Athyn Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit to tie the game before the Lions scored with 1:22 left in regulation.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 6, Bryn Athyn 7

Venue: Nelson Field

Records: Wilson 7-4, 1-2 UE; Bryn Athyn 7-2, 2-1 UE

How It Happened
  • It was clear it would be a defensive-minded contest at the start as goals were hard to come by. There were only three in the first half, and unfortunately for the Phoenix, they all belonged to the Lions.
  • Wilson eventually got on the board in the first five minutes of the third quarter as Anna Gibson (Sr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) took the feed from Sadie Fike (FY, McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County). Just over a minute later, Gibson figured into another goal for the Blue and White as she opened a free-position attempt by finding Emily Young (Jr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) slashing toward the cage for a goal. Young scored again moments later to tie the game, but Bryn Athyn countered with two goals before the end of the frame to lead 5-3 headed to the fourth.
  • Gibson helped the Phoenix take advantage of another player-up opportunity as she scored three minutes into the fourth to cut the deficit to one. After the Lions answered with a goal as the clock ticked under 10 minutes, Alaina Marek (FY, Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) took a feed from Sage Lague (Jr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) to make the score 6-5.
  • The score remained there until Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) provided the equalizer on another player-up chance with 2:09 left in regulation. However, Bryn Athyn countered as Shea Gormley won the ensuing draw control, received a free position attempt, and scored from the eight-meter mark with 1:22 left in the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Gibson led the team with three points on a pair of goals and an assist. Young added a pair of goals to also aid the offense.
  • Young was effective on the defensive end as well as she caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
  • Ahlgren, Lague and Marek all had two draw controls.
  • Krystal Kienast (Sr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) and Kaelyn Goff (FY, Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) combined to make eight saves on the day. Kienast made three in the first half while Goff spelled her in the second and rejected five.
  • Gormley paced the Lions with four goals, four caused turnovers, six ground balls, and six draw controls.
