Women's Lacrosse Falls At Lycoming

(WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.) – The Wilson women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season as it fell to Lycoming in a soggy Saturday showdown. The Phoenix opened up the game with an early lead, but the Warriors pulled ahead down the stretch of the first quarter and slowly pulled away as the game continued.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 11, Lycoming 18

Venue: UPMC Field

Records: Wilson 2-1, Lycoming 3-0

How It Happened
  • No time was wasted to light up the scoreboard as Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) won the opening draw which transitioned to a score 32 seconds later as Anna Gibson (Sr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) found the back of the net for a quick lead. Emily Young (Jr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) won the ensuing draw control and the Phoenix again turned it into a score as Sadie Fike (FY, Lewistown, Pa. / Mifflin County) scored for a 2-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game.
  • The Warriors eventually found their footing and scored just over a minute later to cut the deficit in half. Sage Lague (Jr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) benefitted from a foul and scored on the free position, but the hosts went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Gibson did put the final touches on the opening quarter with a goal, however, to get Wilson within one headed to the second.
  • Wilson did tie the game up as Alaina Marek (FY, Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) connected with Lague, but Lycoming won the following draw control and scored shortly after for a 6-5 lead. The Warriors again went up by two before Alyvia Henneman (FY, Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) and Ahlgren scored back-to-back to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:13 before the half. Unfortunately the Phoenix couldn't build on the momentum and Lycoming was able to close the half on a 5-1 run.
  • Gibson and Marek added third quarter goals, but Wilson wasn't able to cut the deficit to any less than four the rest of the way. The Warriors sealed the win with a 4-1 fourth quarter to set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Gibson and Lague led the team as both had hat tricks in the game. Ahlgren added three points as well with a goal and two assists. Marek and Young both had multiple point games with a goal and a helper each.
  • Defensively Ahlgren had another incredible game as she picked up a season-high nine ground balls and caused six turnovers. In the circle she won six draw controls.
  • Lague was also impressive defensively with three ground balls and six draw controls.
  • Between the pipes Krystal Kienast (Sr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudon Valley) and Kaelyn Goff (FY, Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) combined for eight saves. Kienast totaled five in her first appearance of the season.
  • The Warriors were led by Alexa Baldwin who had a 10-point game with seven assists.
  • Katie Maguire scored a game-high five goals to also lead Lycoming.
  • Riley Block also played a pivotal role for the Warriors as she scored five points with four goals, picked up six ground balls, caused three turnovers, and won 10 draw controls.
