(BALTIMORE, Md.) – Wilson remained unbeaten as it defeated Stevenson to open up a three-game series on Friday night at Calvert Hall College High School. The Phoenix were able to score a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings and received excellent pitching from the battery to limit the Mustangs' opportunities in the victory.
Both teams will square off once again when they play a twin bill on Sunday at Henninger Field.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 6, Stevenson 1
Venue: Carlo Crispino Stadium
Records: Wilson 4-0, Stevenson 3-4
How It Happened
- The Blue and White opened the scoring then Kade Linton (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) sent one over the fence for a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The Phoenix bats remained hot as three hits led to another pair of runs one inning later. Tyler Smith (FY, Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) led off the frame with a single and moved to second on sacrifice before he scored on a single by Brady Andre (Sr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood). Andre eventually scored himself after a Haden Hoff (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Westminster) base hit to left field.
- In the mean time starter Shane Bowie (Sr., Frederick, Md. / Thomas Johnson) had the Mustangs stymied at the plate. He recorded at least one strike out in every inning with two in the first two frames. On top of that he only allowed one hit by the time he left the game after the fifth inning.
- Stevenson was able to get a run in the sixth, but the phoenix were quick to respond. Harry Middlebrooks (FY, Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) led off the seventh with a double and Smith was able to bring him in with another two-bagger three batters later. Mustang miscues helped Wilson add another insurance run as Hoff led off the eighth with a walk, moved to second on an error, and scored another.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson belted out 13 hits with multiple-hit games from five players. Smith finished the evening 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Andre, Hoff, Middlebrooks, and Linton all had two hits in the game. All four scored at least once.
- The Phoenix received exceptional pitching and fanned 14 Mustangs on the night. In addition to Bowie, Hunter Griebel (Sr., Stevensville, Md. / Kent Island) tossed three innings and struck out five, while Emilio Rodriguez (So., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) closed the game and punched out two in the ninth.
