Baseball Splits DH, Takes Series With Rosemont

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson took its first series of United East play after it split a doubleheader with Rosemont on Saturday afternoon. The Ravens got the upper hand with a pair of big innings in the opener, but the Phoenix were able to return the favor to take the nine-inning rubber match.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 7, Rosemont 13
Game 2 – Wilson 13, Rosemont 8

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 8-2, 2-1 Skye; Rosemont 3-12, 1-2 Skye

How It Happened – Game 1
  • Phoenix miscues allowed Rosemont to strike first in a big way in the top of the second. Five errors combined with three hits allowed the Ravens to put up a seven-spot with all runs being unearned. Wilson was able to respond in the bottom half as they pounded out six hits and benefitted from an error for four runs. The bulk of those came as Brady Andre (Sr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) hit his third homer of the series to make the score 7-4.
  • Wilson was able to get even closer in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan McKenzie (Sr., White Plains, Md. / North Point) added another extra base hit with a double to score Andre to make the score 7-5. Two batters later Jordan Daphney (Jr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) hit in Haden Hoff (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Westminster) on a fielder's choice to pull within one.
  • The momentum was short-lived as the Ravens responded with five runs in the fifth. Daphney was able to get an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but left the bases full. Rosemont added an insurance run in the top of the of the seventh.
How It Happened – Game 2
  • The Phoenix flipped the script so to speak in the rubber match as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two. Hoff ignited the charge with a home run to left field to lead off the first. Four batters later Peyton Taylor (Sr., Worton, Md. / Kent County) ripped a single through the right side that allowed Harry Middlebrooks (FY, Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) to score.
  • After Rosemont put one on the board in the top of the second, Wilson came back with five more. Daphney hit a two-RBI single through the left side with the bases loaded which brought in Andre and McKenzie. Taylor followed with a single to left to score Middlebrooks. Kodi Deskins (FY, Tampa, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic) added two more with a base hit to right to make the score 7-1.
  • Both teams also scored in the fourth with the Ravens plating one on a pair of hits to open the inning. Wilson got it back with a Middlebrooks base hit through the left side to score McKenzie. Three batters later Deskins made it 9-2 with an RBI single to right to score Taylor.
  • Another Rosemont run followed in the top of the fifth before the Phoenix unleashed once again for five runs in the bottom half. With the bases loaded Middlebrooks started the rally with a base hit before Daphney added two more runs on a single to right. Deskins added another run with a base hit up the middle to give Wilson a 10-run cushion at 13-3.
  • Rosemont added one more in the sixth and belted a grand slam in the eight, but Wilson held on to cap the win and the series.
Inside The Numbers
  • Chase Supensky (So., Baltimore, Md. / Towson) took the tough luck loss in the opener despite not having a run charged against him. Cody Klotz (FY, Frederica, Del. / Lake Forrest) and Tyler Ware (FY, Palm Harbor, Fla. / East Lake) spelled him out of the pen and struck out three batters each.
  • Jack Vener (Sr., Easton, Md. / St. Michael's) got the start in Game 2 on the day and was strong with nine strikeouts through four innings. Churchill Bridgman (FY, Hardwood, Md. / Southern) was tabbed the winning pitcher as the most effective reliever with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work. Todd Stocks (Jr., Hagerstown, Md. / Grace Academy) and Jack Pachella (So., Wayne, Pa. / Radnor) fanned five more batters between them to give the Phoenix battery 17 punchouts in the series closer.
  • Andre capped an incredible series and week with two more multiple-hit games with five runs scored on the day alone. He went 4-for-9 on the day and 7-of-14 in the series. He scored five runs on the day and had three RBI in the opener Saturday.
  • Deskins bat was hot for the duration of the nightcap as he was a perfect 5-for-5 which resulted in four RBI. Daphney also added four RBI in Game 2.
  • Middlebrooks had a loaded day as he increased his hit streak to eight games. He went a combined 4-for-7 with a 3-for-4 clip in Game 2 with three runs scored and two RBI.
