(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – In its first meeting with Penn State Harrisburg, Wilson fell short in a slugfest that saw both teams combine for 26 runs on 24 hits. The Phoenix went down early before coming back to take the lead in the fourth, but the Nittany Lions were able to pull away late in the game.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 11, Penn State Harrisburg 15
Venue: Henninger Field
Records: Wilson 8-3, Penn State Harrisburg 11-5
How It Happened
- As aforementioned the Nittany Lions got off to a hot start as they batted around and plated four runs in the top of the first. Wilsonw as able to cut that deficit in half during its turn at the plate as Jordan McKenzie (Sr., White Plains, Md. / North Point) scored on a double by Harry Middlebrooks (FY, Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) before Middlebrooks was brought in on a groundout by Jordan Daphney (Jr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside). A three-run home run increased Harrisburg's lead in the second, but the Phoenix were able to get one of those runs back on a Kade Linton (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) sacrifice fly that scored Kodi Deskins (FY, Tampa, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic).
- The Phoenix bats remained warm in the third as they plated another pair of runs. Daphney did the honors once again with a double to left field to score McKenzie. One batter later Peyton Taylor (Sr., Worton, Md. / Kent County) hit in Middlebrooks on a groundout.
- The Blue and White proceeded to take the lead with three runs in the fourth. Once again Daphney did the damage with a two-RBI single to right that scored McKenzie and Middlebrooks to tie the game. A Taylor base hit moved Daphney to second before Deskins had a base hit to bring him in.
- Harrisburg was quick to tie the game as a pair of walks and a base hit helped them score a run in the top of the fifth. The score remained tied until the Nittany Lions plated three in the seventh. The visitors added one run in the eighth and three more in the ninth. They proved to be needed as Wilson threatened another comeback attempt in the final frame. An infield error allowed Tyler Gibbons (FY, Forrest Hill, Md. / Calvert Hall) to keep the game going and Tyler Smith (FY, Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) followed with a single to left field. Brady Andre (Sr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) then kept his hit streak intact with a base knock up the middle to score Gibbons. Haden Hoff (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Westminster) followed up with a double to left to bring in Smith and Andre, but that was all the Phoenix could do.
Inside The Numbers
- Daphney smacked in a four runs on two hits while scoring one himself to pace the offense. McKenzie and Middlebrooks were direct beneficiaries of that as they each scored thrice in the contest.
- Along with Daphney, Middlebrooks, Deskins, and Hoff all had multiple hit games. All four had doubles as well.
- Andre extended his hit streak to 13 games dating back to last season.
- This was the eighth game that Wilson has recorded at least 12 hits.
