(FREDERICK, Md.) – Adrianna Stricek (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa. / Trinity) help lead a furious comeback that came up just short as Wilson fell to Hood in a midweek matinee Wednesday. The junior forward recorded her fifth double-double of the season as the Phoenix erased an 18-point deficit to a one possession game before the Blazers pulled away late in the fourth.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 58, Hood 67
Venue: Volpe Athletic Center
Records: Wilson 3-8, 2-1 UE; Hood 3-6, 0-0 MAC
How It Happened
- The opening of the game featured back-and-forth action with Chelcie Forrester (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / WVU Potomac State) giving the Phoenix an 8-7 lead just over four minutes into the contest. The Blazers then caught fire by closing the period on a 12-3 run. That momentum carried into the second quarter where Hood scored a layup for a 31-13 lead with 5:01 until the halftime break. A Lae Black (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Meade) layup and a Kailee Soto (FY, Lancaster, Pa. / Columbia) 3-pointer brought the deficit to a baker's dozen before Hood's Tiffany Manning scored a layup to close first half scoring.
- While Hood built its lead back to 18 to start the third, Wilson roared back and doubled-up the Blazers by outscoring them 26-13 the rest of the frame. Trailing by 11 with 55 seconds, Leah Laubach (FY, Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) took a feed from Chloe Irving (FY, Martinsburg, W.Va. / Martinsburg) for a 3-pointer before Irving made one of her own on a dish from Black to beat the buzzer and make the score 49-44 headed to the fourth.
- After a Hood free throw, another Laubach triple made it a three-point game. A Black layup and a pair of Stricek free throws kept Wilson within three shortly after. Wilson remained within two possessions after another Stricek foul shot made it 59-55 with 3:49 to go. Hood benefited from an old-fashioned 3-point play and a tip-in bucket over the next minute to make it a nine-point game and held on the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Stricek led the team with 14 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Half of her boards were on the offensive end which helped the Phoenix register seven of their 14 second-chance points.
- Allie Cullison (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill / Kean) reached double figures with 10 points. She was highly effective beyond the arc where she was 3-for-6.
- Jewels Torres (Jr., York, Pa. / West York) was a point away from double-figures with nine points and led the team with four assists.
- The third quarter was one of the best quarters Wilson has had this season as it made 50% (9-of-18) from the field. Four of those were 3-pointers on nine attempts.
- Hood was led by Chanelle Lee with 16 points. Aliyah Taylor added 13 and Manning finished with 10.
