Phoenix Fall In Calendar Closer at Goucher

(BALTIMORE, Md.) – The Wilson women's basketball team capped off the calendar year with a trip to the Charm City to take on Goucher on New Year's Eve. Jewels Torres (Jr., York, Pa. / West York) shined for the Phoenix as she scored 18 points with the bulk of her damage coming at the free throw line. The Gophers were able to counter that with high percentage shooting and strong 3-point shooting as the hosts took the victory.

How It Happened
  • Allie Cullison (Sr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) and Chelcie Forrester (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / WVU Potomac State) helped the Blue and White get off to a strong start as they trailed 14-12 at the five-minute mark. Cullison provided half of the Phoenix heat with some versatility on a pair of free throws, a jumper and a layup. Forrester added four herself with a pair of layups.
  • The Gophers took control for the rest of the frame by going 8-for-12 from the field. Offensive rebounds followed each miss with two resulting in second-chance points. The end result was a 26-5 run that put Goucher comfortably ahead.
Inside The Numbers
  • Torres finished with a team-high 18 points with 14 scored at the charity stripe where she was 14-for-20 on the afternoon. She added five assists and four rebounds. Defensively she was a force as well with six steals.
  • Forrester had a strong game as she recorded a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds. She was 4-for-9 from the field and also highly effective at getting to the line where she was 9-for-11.
  • Lae Black (Jr., Laurel, Md. / Meade / Bluefield State) was impressive with 12 points after she went 5-for-8 on the day.
  • The Gophers featured five players in double-figures. Leading the way for the hosts was Meona Boykin who totaled 25 after she went 10-for-15 with eight rebounds and seven steals.
Up Next
Wilson will now focus on conference play for the rest of the season with this being its final non-league contest. First up for the Phoenix for the rest of the slate is St. Mary's which will visit Chambersburg on Saturday in a women's and men's doubleheader. The women will open the twin bill with a 1 p.m. tip-off against the Seahawks.
